Idle races too fast 1200-1500rpm

After changing oil & filter motor idles too fast, then after motor warms up idles goes up to 1500 and then right back down to 1200, back and forth unless the a/c is turned on, then runs smooth, but fast at 1200 rpm. Found NO: Loose or Broken Wires or Hoses. Ran fine before I changed Filter & Oil. Thanks, RIchard at (916) 961-5966

At first glance not having a model or serial number it sounds like a vacuum leak, ignition malfunction or issues with the governor.

SOURCE: Oil light keeps coming on at an idle

ok. oil ight is probably nothing more than a faulty pressure switch. You can have pressure checked at same screw in port. 15psi is ok...just. very cheap to replace. Ign control module is probably the cut-out fault. You cant really test it; repair by substitution is the trick.

SOURCE: when bought engine idled @ 800 rpm when warm, now

could be numerous reasons. this is your best bet take it in to a mechanic and have your engine codes scanned. it is a minimal charge, some even do it for nothing it only takes 10 minutes.this will point you in the right direction.

SOURCE: 1998 FORD CONTOUR CHECK ENGINE

sounds like EGR valve and sensor this controls idle speed when at a stop. the po171 is a burn lean or rich code need to know what bank 1 or 2. also check for a vacuum leak from one of the hoses.

SOURCE: My 93 Saturn SL2 intermittent stalling issues

I would look at the egr system. First pull the valve and clean it. If you have a vacuum tester this would be a good time to test the valve itself as well. When under load you should be able to see the diaphragm engage and hold and then release as you release the vacuum. If that doesn't work check and/or replace the egr solenoid. It's located on the driver's side of the valve cover and usually runs about 60$.

Yours is a common complaint and the above is the most common remedy. Outside of that you might want to check and clean the idle air control valve and the port where it's housed. If it is extremely dirty or something managed to get stuck in there that could affect you vehicle running at idle as well.

Another thing, even though you just changed the plugs, pull one back out and look at it. If is fouled with oil you might need a new valve cover gasket which if it's leaking badly enough will impede spark.

Idle rpm too high

You don't say if the engine is carb or fuel injected.
If it has a carb, it could be sticking linkage for the fast idle to the choke.
If it is fuel injected it could be a faulty idle air control valve.
Or it could be something holding the throttle open like a binding cable.

Trying to adjust the idle speed. running at 1500 instead of 1250 rpm

The idle speed is controlled by the bikes computer, the ECU. The 1500RPM idle is normal. If you purchase a Race ECM from Erik Buell Racing (http://www.erikbuellracing.com) you can get one with a slightly lower idle programming. The bike does not like to idle low, hence the 1500RPM stock idle.

1987 volvo 244 intermittent fast idle floods after shut down

The coolant temp sensor sends signal to the ECU and the ECU adjusts the idle RPM. When the coolant is cold, the engine requires more fuel to sustain idle with thick oil (oil gets thicker & more viscous when cold). This makes the engine to idle at faster RPM but it should settle down to 850 RPM or so after the coolant warms up. The sensor is nothing but a thermistor; a device that changes electrical resistance according to the coolant temperature.

High fast idle at start up.

On most newer cars there is a fast idle motor controlled by the computer that will hold the fast idle till the engine reaches a preset temp in the computer then the engine should drop down to the set idle according to specs for that car. If the oil pressure continues to stay low after the idle goes down you may need to replace the oil pressure sending unit or if worse case the oil pump.
