IBM 1500 by Lexmark

Characters a,e,j,and i are indistinct, a smudge appears to the left of the j and the a is filled in. This is visible on the ribbon as well as the typed letter. Tried new type wheel, ribbon but no change in problem. It looks as if the ribbon might be moving as the hammer is struck. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

    Hello-

Thanks for the tip. I'm not much of a typewriter tech, having done copiers for the past 45 years. The guy that used to do the typewriters passed away in February and people have been calling me for help. I live near Hilo on the big island of Hawaii and it's a small town with a small town mentality.

Anyway, I took that typewriter back to the customer after having sprayed the print carriage with electrical contact cleaner, and oiled it afterwards, and that seemed to help. It's better but not completely gone. Next time I visit that customer, I'll try what you said and see if that makes a difference. I'll let you know how it turns out.

    Aloha,

It sounds to me like the impression is to heavy try holding the code key down and pressing the "Q" key until the "1" light is lit.

If it is moving as the hammer is struck, then it's one of two things. Either the hammer is moving too slowly, or the ribbon is moving too quickly. Since this is a rather old machine, it seems more likely things would slow down than speed up. I'd check the hammer solenoid. See if it's dirty, or needs lubricated. I wish I could give you more advice on this, but I am not familiar with this specific model, and was unable to find any kind of service manual, or troubleshooting information for it.

Hi we have an old ibm typewriter. I changed the ribbon and the wheel. I cleaned everything but still prints half of the letters. The top part to be exact.

There should be an adjustment on the head that sets the angle of the strike for the wheel. Unfortunatley there are no diagrams available for this technology

Please help i have urgent work to type but my IBM Wheelwriter3500 by LEXMARK is typing half characters

Half characters? Top or bottom? Please remove the ribbon and reinstall it. Likely it got folded. Make sure as well that the correction tape is properly seated. Otherwise it can get in the way. Unless it is a multistrike, you should see the characters imprinted on it. Just like Columbo when he solved another ****. Good luck.

Our company has an IBM Wheel Writer 1500 and I need to know how do I adjust the pitch and how do I install the correction ribbon?

Download the manual for your machine form lexmark support pages (go to the bottom of the page, open "IBM Typewriters" list box and select rour typewriter model):

Faint printing on checks

To my knowledge the 999 ribbon is the best avaivable. Try these things. put a little light (WD40 works well) oil on the back side of the print solenoid, then perss code and "Q" the display will show 1,2 or 3 set it at 3 and then try code "B" for bold print. These should help.

IBM Wheelwriter 6 prints only top portion of characters

The platen is probably not all the way in. Be sure the black latches are lined up with the side frames and press firmly down on the platen.

Characters fill in intermittently.

This is a common problem with old supplies stored in a humid environment. Try leaving ribbon in an air conditioned environment for a couple of days to see if it helps. Otherwise buy a new sealed ribbon to try. Also push the hammer buy hand and see if it moves in and out freely and quickly. If not, the hammer needs some lubricant and or adjusting.

IBM 6400 model i10 print problem

It's likely a "hammer" is defective. This can be caused by
a build up of ink under the ribbon shield and/or around the hammer "fret" itself or the fret is physically broken. Remember
that this is a "shuttle" printer and each fret covers anywhere from
one to three characters depending on model. Some cover fractions of characters as well. The problem will appear as either
data missing on the left or right margin or a blank column of missing data going down the page.

A technician is required to solve all of these problems as the
shuttle assembly must be removed.
