Nivada wristwatch Hi I need to find out the price of a Nivada kinetic wristwatch for insurance purposes. I received it as a gift about 10 years ago. It is silver with a gold face. The band is also silver but has a thick strip of gold in the centre.

After 10 years it will be likely that the Kinetic capacitor will need upgrading. Your watch is designed to tick in two second intervals to tell you the power is very low. The power button will work again when it has some power to show. Yorkshire Watches www,yorkshirewatches.co.uk can do the upgrade for you if your in the UK. Give them a ring.

There are two types, A kinetic rechargable one, and a solar one.

Just check it is the solar one!

Try wearing it for a day and see if there is any change at all.

If it does nothing, there may be a fault with the rechargable battery. If so , it is cost effective to have this repaired.

Your watch is a automatic. All automatics need to wind-up before being worn at first , or if not worn all the time. Automatics will work with-out being wound ,but will not keep time. Wind your watch at least 50 turns (using the crown) or shake about 150 times , and then try it . Automatics need that back-up power to insure it's accuracy.

The problem is it is impossible to determine the value without seeing the watch(condtion is paramount). your best bet is to ship it Registered mail return receipt requested that way you have proof that it was received. Unfortunately watch service is often calculated based on the value of the watch, as insurance, and quality/cost of materials and spares and tools are factors. With the correct lubricant there should be no reason why a quality watch should need that particular job done so regularly, but a 4/5-yearly service is not a bad idea at all, as most problems with this sort of watch can be avoided with regular maintenance.
