Make sure that the XP cd is clean and not scratched.

Also, If it is not the cd., it may be a memory problem. check the ram.

I was looking for step-by-step install guide to putting new hard drive and loading Windows XP on my Dell Inspiron E1505?? I purchased a WD 320GB SATA hard drive to replace my dead 80gb hard drive....Dell...

All you've got to do is:

1) Insert the new hard drive.
2) Press the F8 key as the laptop boots. This will take you into the BIOS.
3) Locate the disk drive priority setting in the bios.
4) Set Priority 1 to your CD/DVD drive and priority 2 to the 320GB hard drive.
5) Save settings and exit the BIOS. This should reboot your laptop.
6) Insert the Windows XP CD.
7) It should not start the setup as it recognises the CD.
8) I will recommend that you format the drive before you install, go along with the format (make sure it does a full format).
9) After the format it will reboot your system.
10) You will be prompted with a message like "Press any key to boot form CD", DON'T press anything otherwise it will start all over again.
11) Now it should start the install. Follow the on-screen instructions.

I bought a new WD1600BEVS drive to go in a laptop but when I put it in and try to install Windows XP it only shows 54GB available out of the 160GB on the drive.

Tell the Windows Install to DELETE the current partition.
Then, tell it to create a new partition, and it will use the entire 160GB.

Windows xp instalation stpos givibg a blue screen in aspire m5640 desktop

Windows Xp installtion give Blue Screen of Death when XP tries to installed devices driver during installation or when the cd is corruptted and cannot be read in graphical mode installation or when the hard drive is corrupted with Bad sector.

Get a new windows XP CD and configure your system BIOS to default setting ( load optimal settings) and configured for IDE drive configuration to compatible mode or disable mode if you are using SATA hard drive.

If problem still occured, get "Bad sector recovery pro" and try to repair the hard disk.If the bad sector are unrecoverable then change the hard drive.

Sometimes, faulty RAM also give blue screen too. Check your RAM too.

Seagate Baracuda 7200.7 in a RAID0 array has failed. On Drive diagnostics Drive test get error message "Drive Failed! Return Code 7". What is the drive error?

Hello mmincalgary:

This drive error code 7 means the controller board that controls the drive has failed, the board is located on the harddrive itself, Replacing this drive will solve your problem, unfortunely Segate has had many issues with this drive especially the SATA ver .7, 160GB versions..

Hi Bijay.

Scroll down to: Partitioning the drive in Windows XP / Windows 2000 (for systems where this is the 2nd drive in the system).
Follow the instruction on the web site.
This Seagate web site will help you setup the Seagate 160 drive.

If you feel the drive is still at fault you can run Seagate’s SeaTools. Click on the next link:
http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/seatools
This software will check the 160GB drive.
(Follow the online instructions for), SeaTools for DOS.

In a Windows XP system & using a FAT 32 & a cluster size of 16kb instead of NTFS. Windows will see the total size of the drive but can only access 149GB of drive space. 11GB of drive space will be used by the FAT. File Allocation Table. The FAT is windows guide to every cluster on the drive.
XP uses NTFS & sets each cluster to 4kb. This 4kb size lowers the total usable GB size & uses more GB's for the FAT. You're 127GB size may be correct for a Win XP system using a NTFS file system. The FAT is using 33GB of drive space as a locator for every cluster on the 160GB drive.
Help with understanding the NTFS file system: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/expert/russel_october01.mspx

Bijay if you are still having trouble understanding please post any questions here.

Good luck!

Drivers for simple 160gb

To access an external USB drive in Windows 98, you need to be using Windows 98 SE (Second Edition). Before SE, there was no USB support in Windows 98.

Even then, you will probably not be able to access the full 160Gb of the hard drive. Your best bet is to upgrade to a newer version of Windows, such as 2000, or XP. I know that, depending on your hardware, that might be asking a little too much, but to support all these more modern gadgets, you're going to have to give up on 98 eventually.

Hope this helps.
