Will not function with Windows Vista

Hi I recently bought new laptop with Windows Vista installed. I checked the Fuji site to see if my camera compatible (a350). It said it was and to use regurlar USB driver for Win Xp. However I have installed this but whenever I connect my camera it says communication error. Any body have any ideas. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling but still the same.

You do not need any software for the camera to be recognised. As you have discovered it can complicate things. Remove the software. Vista like XP before it will recognise the camera via the Camera/Scanner Wizard.

I have Windows Vista also, but my installation screen came up. If nothing pops up when you put it in, I would suggest opening "My Computer" and right clicking the icon with FinePix and starting it that way. Or, maybe you could check the Fujifilm site and see if you can download the software off the internet.

Finepix a345 Windows Vista

You don't need a driver.

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo cataloging program such as Windows Photo Gallery or Picasa.

PRODUCT KEY

If the laptop was bought as new, the message can be a bogus , coming from some kind of virus. It is rare that a seller distibute a laptop with non genuine software.

To know if you own a windows valid licence check if there is Windows licence sticker on the bottom side of the laptop.
If you have no sticker with Vista serial, like this one (they are for XP yours must be for Vista):

Then installed Windows is probably a pirate copy.

The fact that the problem has gone undetected for some times may be normal, as Microsoft controls genuinity only when you do certain updates.

Camera not connecting to computer

You'll need to update the camera software for use with Vista. The Vaio isn't the problem. Thee updates for the F20 can be found here: FujiUSA

More ram for my laptop

Never, NEVER buy a computer that is going to run Vista with less than 1Gig minimum!
2 Gigs of RAM is recommended for Vista.
To check on prices and the type check some online sites that sell memory

Most laptops have a removable door or hatch on the bottom where you can access the memory very easily. The modules easily clip in or out but never use force! (RTFM)
If you take it to someone, they'd probably charge $50 for labour, plus parts and the job takes 5 minutes.

Easily do it yourself, or find a teenager who's good with computers. Son, nephew, neighbour perhaps?

Before buying any new modules, check your laptop to see how many slots you have and what type of modules are in there now.
To upgrade to 2 Gig,  you will have to buy 2 new 1Gig modules, There's a 2Gig kit (1Gigx2) listed at one site for $80.

You would remove you current memory and install the 2 new 1Gig modules. Sell your 512 or make a keychain from it.
