Whirlpool Washing machine top load

My fiance's grandmother's washing machine will pump water into the tub, but not out. I do not hear the motor engage in any cycle. I think she needs a new drive motor. Does that sound right to you? I replaced the coupling about a year ago and it had been fine ever since, until yesterday. Any help?

It sounds like ti could be the lid switch. Some whirlpool models will fill with the lid open. even before cheking the switch for continuity open and close the lid and listen for the "click". Ifyou hear the click then check the switch for continuity.

Maytag performa PAV2300AWW does not spin (wash cycle works fine). During the spin cycle the tub does not rotate...but i can hear the motor running...water drains...Pls help

check the tub on down to the pump located on the motor for obstructions, then to the hose leading to the drain from the pump for obstructions,then possibly pump is bad

Washing machine won't always spin on its own

This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:
http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action

Enter your model number and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

Since it will spin on lighter loads, the problem points to the clutch.

When the washer goes into spin mode, the motor is reversed to spin the pump and a clutch on top of the transmission engages to spin the tub.

Following is a description of how to access the clutch and check the clutch bands.

Sears and Whirlpool have a replacement parts kit for the clutch.

If the bands look OK, the problem could be in the neutral drain inside the transmission.

I was washing pillows and water just overflowed - I'm not sure from where. I think the bottom of the machine. Just a little bit of water. Did I ruin the motor?

If you let the tub fill, then put the pillows in, you may have caused the water level to overflow the outer tub somewhat. If you didn't smell smoke or hear any frying sounds, the motor is probably ok. Does the washer seem to operating normally?

Maybe the motor is shot, maybe the electronics are messed up. You might be able to siphon the water out of the tub.

Switch??

Could be the lid switch . You can bypass it to test it or if you hear the the motor trying to pump out it could be something stuck I the pump.. let me know what you find out..krazytech
