Re: where to only provides the state you are in--can't be...
It sounds as if you have an older software. However newer software, don't press address, but rather press near... at the bottom of the where to page, and select"a different city" or on the where to page select spell, and spell a name that you know appears in the adjacent state, but not yours...
Good Luck, GB_C
If this doesn't work, upgrade your software, and try anew...

need a lot more info .... what gps model do you have,
your saying you put address it goes straight to street? then say i put addrees it says not found
Most Nuvi units you have to press Where To...Address....and on the bottom of screen you will see Change State / Province
First select your State..... then go back and select the City... it should now let you put the number of house press done ..then the street name
After powering up the unit and selecting address, the unit displays, "In What State is the Address? and Spell State. When I press Spell State, it has No Matches Found. When I press Back and attempt to enter the first letter of any state, the unit displays "No Matches Found".
When you type a stae it will automatically show the list of states you can scroll down to check if the states is in the list or if the states is not recognize try to check the region make sure your in lower 48 states.
Click on tool icon on lower right corner. Touch Map icon. Touch
map Info icon in center of screen. Touch City Navigator North America NT v8 icon so that the box is checked. Then click on back until you reach "Where To?" screen. If "Touch City Nav..." box is not checked, then you cannot input state.
I found a fix. Reset didn't work so I tried the Clear All Information. As you power on, press a finger on the lower right corner of the screen until a menu option appears asking if you really want to clear all information. Select yes. The manual says you lose all your favorites and other stored data, but I didn't lose anything and I can now select a different State!
When you select an address, make sure you select the right state/town since many addresses are the same and the state/town is the only thing that makes a difference.
Your garmin has a menu, find the menu and you will be able to fo to "ERASE ROUTE" or "CLEAR ROUTE" press it. It can be worded differently, but find the option with the words erase or clear.
For inserting the right address I will give you an example:
100 Main street, Farmingdale N.Y. is your address
touch select route, it will ask you for one bit of information at the time.
select town: Farmindale NJ, Farmingdale NY it will give you a list of Farmingdale towns in US. Select Farmingdale NY. If you live in NY.
next, it will ask select street: Main st you write your street, make sure you don't choose Main rd this is Main road not Main ST
next select number: insert 100 since this would be your house number.
Remember it is very important to select the right town and the right street to get to the right address.
You can practice by inserting addresses that are near to your location and then erasing it.
Lately, my navigation system will turn on but it will NOT allow me to type in a new address to search. Actually, half of my options are not highlighted, that is to say, the system will not allow me to select them. How can I fix it?
