SOURCE: Honda lawn mower, self propelled mechanism not working

check the mechanism first before changing the gearbox its possible that the cable might jump out from the pulley or the cable is worn out or its possible that the gear on the tire is worn out to if not then that would be the time for you to change the gear box it would be hard to change it if you don't have the right tools to work on it if you know how everything work its not that hard to replace it just make sure were everything goes memorize the parts before disassembling cause that would be you guide to reassemble it...goodluck

SOURCE: My self propelled high wheel mower doesn't go

If this is a TroyBilt 34068, check your belt to make sure it is still on the transmission pulley. If the belt is in place, start it up, engage the transmission and observe both axle ends where they protrude from the center of the wheels, if one of them is turning, you have somehow lost the square key that locks the wheel to the axle. Replace the key and you will be good to go

Testimonial: "Very good info, but I have to admit that it all of a sudden started working again. I still would love to find the manual. "

SOURCE: how do I replace the clutch cable on my honda self

I fixed the drive cable just yesterday. If the model is exactly hrx217hxa with the serial number between MAGA–1000001 and 139999 as mine is, it can be quite involved to replace the cable if this is the first time, because honda wants to replace the "control arm" as well. You can find a detailed instruction to replace the drive cable from the following link.

http://www.lawnsite.com/showthread.php?t=281234

The part number that you need to order is 06225-VH7-305, which comes with a very brief instruction on how to replace based on the service manual (not the user manual). The above link will guide you to how to replace the cable, but since the transmission end of the cable changed, you need to replace the "control arm" as well. This requires to disengage the drive "belt", which is the first challenge. Once you disengage it, it is relatively straight forward to replace the "control arm" if you have the right tools (1/8" pin punch and a challen lock plier which are described in the instruction that came with the cable kit).
Engaging the drive belt back on is the biggest challenge in the whole process, unless you have the right tool to handle the powerful spring that pulls the whole transmission to give friction to the drive belt. I spent two hours to try to engage the belt without the right tool (probably you need a "brake spring tool"), and I finally did it.
The rest of the assembly process is straight forward if you memorize what you did for disassembly. The above link can help you as well.
I took pictures of every step, and am going to post it somewhere soon, but if you want to replace it soon, please send me a message if you need help.

The right rear wheel intermittently locks up on my lawnmower when going forward stopping forward movement temporarily, until I move it backwards to "unlock" it. Any ideas?

There is an excellent 3 part video that may help you to fix this problem. Please see the 2nd and 3rd videos:
https://youtu.be/Vk_tpjKlbjM
https://youtu.be/DdiewLxTQDc
Things you can try:
(1) Remove casing over rear wheel drive assembly and perform a test run to assure all parts are moving as expected
(2) Lubricate the shafts with lightweight motor oil where the shaft penetrates into the gear box of each wheel
(3) Remove each rear wheel, inspect gears for damage and free movement. Grease up each drive gear and the shaft.
(4) Inspect gears on each wheel for damage.
(5) If none of the above fixes the problem, try swapping out the front wheels to the rear wheels provided the front wheels can accommodate the gearing on the rear wheels
(6) If this doesn't work try replacing the small gear assembly on the right rear wheel
These steps are illustrated in the videos.
Good luck and hope this helps.

I have a self propelled lawn mower and the the belt that propells the wheels is loose, do I need to replace it or is there a way to tighten the tension.

Cathy, there is a way to adjust belt tension on some models whether it is by the cable or a slotted bracket where the idler wheel is mounted, depends on make and model. If you have your manual check in it for belt adjustment. Could be stretched belt, stretched cable, worn/oil on pulley, seized tensioner, stretched/broken spring on tensioner, etc.

HOW DO I REPLACE THE SELF PROPELLED ON MY HONDA MOWER. MODEL HRX217HXA

http://www.lawnsite.com/showthread.php?t=281234

Good pictures on this link to follow. I found it eaiser if you put your mower on a work bench or 2 sawhorse with plywood on them. Read everything on the link for your plan before you start. When you finish you will feel you can fix anything on the mower. Hope this will do the trick for you. Good luck!

Honda Harmony II HRR216TDA drive clutch cable snapped. Need advice on how to access transmission box to change cable. Owner's manual does not address this level of repair and schematic obtained from local...

First put the machine on the side with the muffler facing the floor . Right behind the rear wheel you have a 10mm bolt that you have to remove and look for another 2 10mm bolts holding the plate that you remove the first bolt (one should be at the bottom and the other one on the side) .
Slide that plate out of the machine and now you be able to see the belt that goes to the transmission and also the drive clutch cable.
Hope this help .
