No, this is not necessary. Try unplugging your printer for 1 full minute and then plug it back in. This should solve your problem. If not, remove the cartridge again and insert it "while" the machine is on. Good luck, Dana

The chances are that the chip on the cartridge is defective. Have you tried another cartridge? If you can, take the defective cartridge back to the vendor and get a replacement or refund. If it worked once, it is likely the cartridge and not the printer.
