Booting up My laptop was recenty knocked off of a coffee table. The screen is cracked so I hooked it to an external monitor. When it boots up it will ask what mode I want to run in. If I click normal mode, everything comes up normal but shifted to the right of the screen on the monitor and then before I can try to adjust the settings so everything is in middle of the screen the monitor shuts down. I can run the laptop with the external monitor in safe mode and it works, icons and desktop is centered and looks good. Is there a program I can run while in safe mode to find out if it's the motherboard or if something else was knocked loose? Thank you for any help as I do not have the money to repair the laptop right now.

What is happening is that the screen resolution of the notebook is not matching the capabilities of the monitor and is therefore going into power saving mode, unfortunately you wont be able to change it as the screen is damaged, that is why it works in safe mode as the resolution is only 640 x 480 without any graphics drivers

No display it is power is on

Hook up to external monitor .. Does the pre boot screen pop up (black and white writing at start ) ? If display runs on external monitor then your screen needs replacing usually or if you see a vague image on laptop screen then inverter or backlight is gone .. if no display on external and no pre boot screen probably the graphics chip on laptop has malfunctioned.

Presario 2500 screen wont come on but computer and lites are working

If you can't see any obvious damage, like a cracked screen, sometimes the module that illuminates the LCD screen just goes out. If it has a VGA port and you can get a computer monitor, plug the monitor in and see if it will boot up and run. It is possible that you might have the computer set up to boot to an external screen, but you would still see the Windows and HP logos at the boot up. If you see NOTHING at all, then try an external monitor. If that works, you may replace your screen...or not.

Compaq Presario CQ50-110US 15-inch Laptop dropped will boot but no video

Your laptop may have a combination of problems. Since the laptop was dropped, it is possible that your may a motherboard that no longer outputs video through the video controller, or the screen may have been damaged internally. Try hooking up an external monitor through the vga output of your laptop, usually located on the side or back of the laptop. If the external monitor works, then most likely it is your screen that's bad, if the external monitor doesn't works, then most likely it is your motherboard that's bad.

Let me know if this helps.

One thing that you can do is going to safe mode by pressing F8 on initial boot. Once you choose safe mode you can then opt to choose system restore which will revert your system to a previous state ( a date ) that your windows booted and functioned properly. Or you can run your antivirus in safe mode and see if there are malicious viruses that is preventing your system to boot properly.

If you get the boot image on your screen then you screen is working correctly unless there's something that you not explaining. You can try an ext. monitor if you think it is something related to your LCD screen not woring during boot up. If the ext monitor not showing your laptop to boot then you have problem with your OS and may need to get it repaired or restored.

ACER cracked screen..external monitor???

Hi there.
The keyboard toggle you are using is the correct one.
Sometimes you have to hit Fn + F5 a couple of times to stay on there is no real set time. Make sure Fn + F6 is on so the laptop screen stays on.

Good luck and thanks for using FixYa!!

Dell C400 will not boot using LCD screen when cold

I have seen this problem before, after booting to the external monitor go into the display settings and try setting the resolution to 1024 X 768 and the color settng to 16 bit or preferably 32 bit. If you can do this, then shut down the laptop remove the external monitor and try booting on the LCD display. BPCS

Blank screen

I think your LCD is stuffed is it under warranty do you know BUT if the screen is cracked they wont replace it typical HP. To get your external monitor running hold down the function key and the blue monitor looking key similtaneously normally on compaq its the F4 key but look around your keyboard (looks like a monitor) and is blue letters.
