Hi there,
the HDD is a common component to fail in a DVR.
The DVR Itself should actually tell you the status of the storage device if you navigate the menu.

most small engines have a serial number stamped into the base of the crankcase on one half.

hay ya m8 you will need some sort of firmware on the hdd most times for it to work if you can get to menu settings see if you can formatt the hdd and see if that works if not get back to me and ill see if i can find a link for the firmware for ya hope this works for ya

Guys this one stumped me for some time, here is my solution that worked like a dream

1. plug the hard drive you are using into a pc and check the hard drive is recognise and works.
2. Delete all partitions
3. ensure it has a 8 bit cache buffer!! This is the most important one. That means the system only supports older hard drives. I got 2 second hand ones from the local pc store for $50. See the list of hard drives that are know to work below.

FYI for some reason the person I bought this off online "Ebay" had no idea how to support and I could not get support from their web site as they email they give just bounces back.

Most likly there is a problem with the HDD on the DVR if that is what you have DCT look like DVR's but do not have a HDD; If this is a DVR you will need to call you're provider or the manufacture of the DVR and have them Trade out the DVR; Never open the DVR and try to replace the HDD you're self you will damnage the box byond repare;

Well if you have another dvr thats the same,,take cover off and switch hdd/hard drives,,or take ot out of the dvr hook it as a second hdd to your cpu and retrive the movies,,goodluck

Well if it is dead and the transformer is getting power then next step is the processor.  Which if it is dead, then I am sure all the internal components are as well.  My recommendation is have a professional give you and estimate and buy a UPS unit that will regulate the power to you important expensive units such as this.

The internal power supply to the HDD is often suspect in these units. Check you have power on the internal plug to the HDD from the circuit board. if you do not Try fitting an external HDD power supply (£15) this cured my unit which had a similar fault.
