Refrigerator

The self defrost mechanism is not working. The evaporator is getting blocked with ice, an insulator, and that affects freezer as well as refrig temps. When you unplug unit the ice melts and it will work till the ice block returns.

GE refrigerator is cooling to 48 degrees F, but the setting is at 37 degrees F. The temperature on my furnace is set to 70 degrees F. Is this affecting the refrigerator?

The freezer may be overcrowded with food in this case cold air from freezer is not migrating to refrigerator compartment. Inside the refrigerator, at the bottom and on top, there are opening sliding door that allows cold air from freezer to circulate in the refrigerator. Make sure that they are not obstructed. Or simply, your refrigerator condenser is dirty and may need cleaning. If neither of this is the solution, get a repairman to check or fix it for you.

How to set a temperture

Hello,

By keep your refrigerator or freezer too cold, it unnecessarily wastes electricity. The recommended temperature is 37 to 40 degrees for the fresh food compartment of the refrigerator. The recommended temperature for the freezer compartment is 5 degrees. If you have a separate freezer for long-term food storage, it should kept at 0 to -5 degrees.

The following steps below is how to set the temperature of your refrigerator.

The first thing you must know is that your refrigerator should be set at 37-38 degrees. Anything at 40 or higher and you are risking food born illness (food poisoning) or spoiling your food.

Step 2
Place your magnetic thermometer in the refrigerator.

Step 3
Set your dial on your refrigerator to the second lowest setting. (If your refrigerator is already equipped with a digital thermostat, simply set it for 37 or 38 degrees and do not move on to the next step)

Step 4
After 2 hours, check your thermometer reading. If your reading is 38 degrees, there is no need to go higher and you are ready to put your groceries in. Be sure not to open and close your refrigerator during these two hours or your temperature reading will be incorrect.

If your reading is higher than 38 degrees, move your dial up to the next coldest setting and repeat the steps every two hours until you reach the correct temperature for your refrigerator.

Step 5
Once you have reached the correct refrigeration temperature for your refrigerator, place the magnetic thermometer in the refrigerator permanently and watch for changes.

Typically, your refrigerator temperature will need to be adjusted with the seasons, a higher setting in the summer and a lower setting in the winter.

Hope this helpout and take care.

Freezer is icing up we have already vacuumed the vents in teh front and the back of the refridge and it is still icing up

Hello, This is a common problem, the first thing to check is the overall internal refrigerator temperature. The proper temperature should be between 35-42 degrees. Here are some things to try:
  • If your refrigerator temperature is closer to 25 degree try turning the temperature up slightly.
  • If you find the temperature varies a lot from the top shelf to the bottom(where it is coldest) try putting produce or other sensitive product on a higher shelf
  • If the temperature is too low and you cant make it warmer by adjusting the thermostats, you probably have a defective thermostat. If so you need to replace it because they cannot be repaired. Other possible problems are a leak in the seal(refrigerant) system, cold air migration(in side by side models) or a defective air damper.
Thanks

Freezer not cold enough; fridge OK

Hello cokoliso,
Welcome to Fixya

You said, your Trio won't make ice. Freezer stays at about 25 degrees regardless of control setting. Fridge maintains 40 degrees at mid setting. Shouldn't the freezer be close to zero? Is there a way to check the temperature sensor in the freezer?

To check the temperature you can buy a refrigerator thermometer at the hardware store.
Ask if it can be used in the freezer too!

The fridge sounds slightly to cold and the freezer not enough.
Fist look in your freezer and check if the articles there are full to the max and covering the air vents usually found in the rear of the freezer. If so clear an opening for the freezer to breath.
Refrigerators and freezers usually share the cold air and I've seen this be the problem on many occasions.
If freezer was not I blocking the vents or even full to the max.

Then pull the plug out or if you can not reach the plug, trip the breaker off for 5 minutes and see if this resets the system.BUT do not plug the fridge back in before at least 3 minutes.

Let me know how it goes and send me any questions.
Thank You, Huuum

The refrigerators accumulate ice

the fridge distrubutes cold by air movement. A overstuffed fridge can have trouble. There is a fan that blows a controlled amount of freezer air over to the food side, altho when this goes you usually have frozen freezer and food too warm. Make sure the air is allowed to move.
