You need to make sure that the AV cables are connected correctly Red/White/Yellow the yellow cable is for the picture and the other two are for the audio. if the cables are well connected try a different set of cables. Try that if nothing works let us know.

The unit did not come with the separate Audio and Video connections that you need. You should be able to go to a Radio Shack and tell them that you have an older tv that doesn't have the proper connections for your dvd player. They have a couple of units that will allow you to connect the DVD to your TV. Unfortunately that type of connection will not give you the quality of picture that you would get with the proper type of TV.
Most universal or multi-brand remotes will control a TV's basic functions, but almost none will support advanced functions like menus. If the TV doesn't have a front panel menu button, the best solution is to buy a universal remote of the same brand as the TV. If you get a Zenith universal remote, it should have a menu button that will work with the TV.
The best thing I can recommend is to seek an estimate as we cant teach ya how to fix the set as your aware of and second is if its gonna cost alot then buy a new one . Sorry couldnt be of more assitance man. Good Luck
