When i turn on the power button, the copier makes a sound like its trying to start up for about 1 second, but it doesn't start up.could this be the switch or is there some other component like a relay. please advise
Does the machine start and switch itself off? Some errors cause this to occur to prevent further damage. Try switching it on with the front door open, this will prevent the fixing heater circuitry from initialising. You will then need to find the error code. The ones that cause it to switch off never appear on screen, only viewable thru service mode. Push a straightened paper-clip into the hole below the right hand meter inside the front of the machine, press << and >> to get to *1* DISPLAY, find ERROR and let me know. Hope this helps...
There is a circuit breaker on the rear of the machine, towards the finisher/exit side (I think). Make sure this is in the ON position. Push indent to test too. There is a circuit breaker on the rear of the machine, towards the finisher/exit side (I think). Make sure this is in the ON position. Push indent to test too.

The only reason to call the phone company is if you're not getting a dial tone on that line. Otherwise, have you shut down the printer and tried to reset it to factory defaults. To do that, follow the instructions below:
1 Switch the Canon MX310 off using the "Power" button, then push the "Stop/Reset" button on the control panel. Hold the button down for about five seconds.
2 Push the "Power" button while holding "Stop/Reset." Hold down both buttons for five seconds.
3 Release "Stop/Reset" while holding down the "Power" button.
4 Push "Stop/Reset" twice while continuing to hold the "Power" button. Release the "Power" button. The power light will turn green.
5 Once the light is steady green, push "Stop/Reset." Wait about three seconds and push it again. Wait three more seconds and push it one final time, for a total of three times. The power light will turn orange.
6 Push the "Power" button, then lift the MX310 cover open.
7 Remove both ink cartridges and wait 10 seconds. Replace the cartridges and close the MX310 cover. Wait 30 seconds.
8 Push the "Power" button. Wait a few seconds to allow the printer to fully power down, then switch the Canon MX310 back on using the "Power" button.
1/ Turn off the canon printer 2/ Hold down the Stop/Reset button 3/ Not releasing the Stop/Reset button, hold down the Power button, now release the Stop/Reset button 4/ Not releasing the Power button, double click Stop/Reset button and release both the Power & Stop/Reset button - doesn't matter in which order 5/ Click Stop/Reset button four times 6/ Click the Power button to confirm the selected action (reset counter absorber)

making it into service mode, make sure the inner door is all the way up,
make sure the top is closed, make sure both feeders have paper in them,
make sure to turn off the power but do not unplug it. Start by pressing
the stop/reset button first and then power button.

Most likely, you have a problem with the scanning lamp.... When you turn the copier on, will it turn right off? If so, try to hold the power switch "ON". The Display pannel will flash a Error Code... It may be a E0200 or E0220 or E000. Get the Error Code and get back to us... I think you have a heat or scanning lamp is shorting out... Good Luck
1. Turn off printer 2. Hold down Resume button and press Power button. 3. Keep holding down Power button and let Resume button go. 4. Press Resume button 2 times then let BOTH buttons go. 5. Green lights will flash and then stop blinking. 6. When green lights are solid, press the Resume button 4 times. 7. Press the Power button and the printer should turn off, if not, press the Power button once more. 8. Your printer should respond as normal..
