When I try to turn the power on, it shuts off immediately. "Cyber-shot" appears in the window, then it beeps twice and turns off. I've tried new batteries and rechargeable batteries. Neither worked.
I got this from the Sony website. I haven't tried it yet. I also have an email in to them.
Follow this procedure to troubleshoot if the power will not turn on.
IMPORTANT: If model-specific information is required to complete any of the steps in this solution, refer to the operating instructions supplied with the product. Manuals are available online in the Manuals/Specs/Warranty section of the Sony® eSupport Web site.

I posted earlier, prior to trying what Sony had suggested. I tried it and at first it didn't work, however I didn't have an AC adaptor so I hooked the camera up to my laptop with a USB cable. First try nothing. I then took the Memory stick out and put it back in (while I was connected) and the next try the camera turned on. However, it's not my camera and I'm unable to get it to do anything except be on, it's like it's frozen, so there may be other problems. BTW, the edit/playback setting is the arrow in a box.

I had the same problem. I read on another site that you should remove the battery, hold down the power button for 60 seconds, and then put the battery back in. It seemed to work for mine tonight.

I had the same problem, corrected it by cleaning the battery contacts inside the camera.

I also had this problem with my DSC-S730. Take the batteries out and hold the power button for 10 seconds. Get new name brand alkaline batteries. Warm them in your hands and insert them properly and close the battery door. Then hold the camera upside down so the batteries make good contact and press the review (>) button.

When I try to turn the power on, it shuts off immediately. "Cyber-shot"
appears in the window, then it beeps twice and turns off. I've tried
new batteries
camera switches on for one second then switches of
All of a sudden won't turn on no matter what I do. Has fresh batteries
it will power up, but my screen is blank. I have only had it for a month. The battery is fully charged.
I changed the batteries but when I hit the power button, nothing happens except the "cyber-shot" screen lights up for just a second, then goes black again. I can't get the lens to come out when I turn on the power on the camera. I've tried all your other solutions--what next?
I can't get the lens to come out when I turn the power on the camera. The "cyber-shot" screen lights up for a second when I hold down the power button but that's about it. I tried new batteries and also hooking the UBS cord to the camera and removing the memory card but nothing helped. Any suggestions?
Have same problem. Tried all below/above. None worked. Believe the on/off button needs cleaning or changing.
