Question about GE WBSR3140DW Top Load Washer

1 Answer

Washer drains but won't spin.

My GE washer - GE WHDRR418G1WW model top loaderWill drain but not spin. I have had this problem twice before (new Jan 2008). I had the tech come out the first time. He told me that sometimes the computer gets confused if there has been a surge of electicity. He unplugged the unit and then opened and closed the lid for a number of times (20? 40?) Then plugged it back up and it worked just fine. It did it again a few months ago, I followed those steps and again got it to working fine. Now it has done it again. I am not certain about the exact steps, whether it was 20 40 or another number of times I need to open and close the lid. Or if I was supposed to unplug it for two minutes, and then re plug it in before I did the open/close lid thing. I actually though I was to do the open/close lid routine while unit was unplugged, but I am not sure. Anyone else know about this reset procedure? He told me that if I bought a surge protector, we shouldn't have this problem. I bought one and now I have this problem anyway.

I finally remember the exact steps the Tech told me to do:

My problem was that it would do everything except spin. The drain pump would work and it would never start spinning. The solution is to unplug the machine for 3-4 minutes. Then re-plug it back in. Then open and close the lid twenty times, ensuring that the lid is closed completely for about 1 second each time you close it. Then hit the start switch. The tech told me that sometimes a surge of electricity can confuse the "brain". The steps I described will reset it. This is the third time in a little over a year this machine has done this and each time, the steps I described have reset it so that it will work.

The solution is to unplug the machine for 3-4 minutes, the plug it back in. Now raise and loewr the lid all the way up and all the way down for twenty repetitions. Make sure the lid closes all the way for about one second each time. Then close the door and push/pull the start button. This will reset the brain. It has become confused due to a minor power surge. It should now be working properly.

No. The next time it happens I will do this:

My apologies. I did not read your solution all the way. The first time it did this was about 3 weeks after I bought it new. It is only a little over a year old now. Why on Earth would anything be worn at all? I had a tech out the first time and he checked a bunch of stuff, then did this little trick and it worked for several months, then did it again. I did the little trick then and it worked again for several months. Now once more. I have changed the rating I gave you and apoloogize for not reading your solution completely. It was rude of me. What is the easier way to clear the code?

My machine (WHDRR418G1WW) will not agitate nor spin. motor board LED flashes 6 times (code = lock rotor). The tub, belt and pully all free rotating with motor shaft by hand. I followed the code clearing steps in this post and motor board LED flashed as 'normal'. restart the machine same 6 flashes came back. bad motor ?

MNTech... Thanks for posting such a thorough explanation! I am going to try this tonight! BTW, the bulletin is actually HL 02-08. :) I found it at ServiceTechHelp.com, but you have to be a "member" to see the 2-page bulletin.

Does the washer fill with water and agitate?

Do you know how to take the front panel off?

I have a hoover (model vhd-822) washing machine and it would do everything else but spin. I switched it off at the socket, opened and closed the door about 8-10 times, turned it back on the socket and then tried the spin and it worked. It does seem like it has re-set the computer which must have got confused. I also did pray first and ask God for help :-)

The next time this condition occuers, take the front panel off the machine and look under the top cover of the motor at the right front side. There is a LED light on the motor inverter board there. If it is flashing twice, then a pause, then repeating this again and again you most likely have a loose hub nut on your wash basket. (the motor reads this as belt slippage)
1. Order and install a new hub washer (WH2X1199) and a new split ring (WH2X1195) along with a new hub nut (WH2X1193). If the hub part of the basket is worn, replace that as well (plastic tub models = WH45X10027, SS tub = hub / basket WH45X10060.
2. Tighten hub nut, torque to 110 ft-lbs.
3. Clear flash code error. (your method to clear code is a bit more extreme than required, but will work)

Why the bad rating? Info I gave not only tells you what's really causing your problem, but how to prevent it from re-occouring.

The problem originally may have been that the hub nut was not tightened enough at the factory, and having a loose tub can cause wear. Your washer might have a "high torque" motor, which has been replaced with a lower torque motor now. If you have a high torque motor, it should be replaced also. Have your servicer call GE Tech support to find out about how to tell if you have a "high torque" motor.

It appears that your servicer was unaware of GE service bulletin HL 01-08 (issued January 2008) which covered the hub nut issue. If your model has only the standard one year parts and labor (not an extended warranty on the tub) I would call GE customer relations and explain the service performed on your washer never really solved the problem. Ask if they will authorize a service call to have the parts replaced that I mentioned, as that should have been done when your machine was looked at the first time. (age 3 weeks)

If they say no, well, you're not worse off than you are already, except for the time on hold on a toll free number. (try 800-386-1215)

The minimum to reset the inverter motor code is:

    1. Washer cannot be in agitate or spin state.

    2. Unplug washer and wait at least 15 seconds.

    3. Re-connect and after a few seconds open and close the lid 5 times (or more) within a 12 second period. (this must happen within 30 seconds or re-connecting power)

Thanks for the bumped up rating. Good luck with your washer.

Kenmore washer Model 110, Serial No. 27602690 won't spin

If wash cycle operates and water drains as should before spin indicates motor spinning. Chances are bad timer If your a real fixer you can remove timer control from panel check and clean all contacts internally making sure none are stuck closed . (Have had 3 110s in my time).not easy but can be done or buy new about 150$ reassemble and check operation.

GE WASHER #WHDRR418G1WW DRAINS BUT WON'T AGITATE OR SPIN

Most likely you'll need a new motor, you can check the belt, to see if its attached around the big pulley. To access, you'll need to pop the front cover off the unit, it has two tabs you push in, on the front, where the top lid meets the front cover. Use a flat-head, be careful not to scratch your paint.

You can also, take off your back panel, on the control console, and remove the wiring diagram, you can diagnose this washer yourself, because the motor has a blinking light that will indicate to you, what is going on with your unit, it will tell the problem for you.

Please take a look at this website, about half-way down, as it could also be your lidswitch.

WHDRR418G1WW WASHER WON'T AGITATE OR SPIN, NOT MAKING NOISES. FILLS AND DRAINS FINE.

sounds like you have a broken lid switch on the washer, maybe someone slammed the door or placed or stood on top of the washer, a broken lid switch won't allow washer to go into spin mode is a safety device so if is on spin cycle an someone sticks their hand it the machine stops an not breaks your hand.

broken lid swtich

good luck leave some feedback thanks!

I just had a new GE washer delivered to my home today, June 24, 2008. All it will do is fill with water and than drain. The agitator cycle does not work and the spin cycle does not work. Model...

We had the same problem with our new GE washer.......the repairman just left. It's the circuit board on the motor that failed, causing the motor to stop working. GE will replace it under warranty.
