Original-Style Super NES RF to VCR Hookup



Installation Steps:

Locate the VCR's VHF IN [ANT, CATV, 75S(ohm)] or Cable Connector.
Disconnect the existing cable wire from the VCR's VHF IN.
Connect the short, thick wire from the RF Switch (labeled ANT) to your VCR's VHF IN.
Reconnect the existing cable wire (disconnected in step 2) to the silver post labeled ANT on the RF switch.
Connect the thin wire from the RF Switch (labeled Control Deck) to the back of the Super NES (labled RF Out).
On the back of the Super NES, set the 3/4 switch so that it matches the channel of the VCR. Note on Sharp TV/VCR Combo
After the system is connected to the VCR:

Insert the Game Pak firmly into the Control Deck.
Plug the controller(s) into the front of the Control Deck. Use the far left port for player one.
Plug the AC Adapter into the back of the Control Deck. Plug the other end of the cord into a wall outlet.
Slide the Power Switch to the On position.
Turn your TV and VCR on. Set up your TV and VCR the same way you would to watch a movie on the VCR.
The game image should now be displayed on the TV screen. You are ready to play!
Note: The RF Switch does not produce stereo sound. To get stereo sound, connect your Control Deck using the Stereo Audio/Video Cable.

If you are SURE you have hooked it up correctly, and it sounds like you have, be sure you have it plugged in a outlet that you know that works. You shiuld see the power light come on after turning it on. If your TV has a VHF cable connector, please see below. (Note: The existing antenna/cable to the TV should be first disconnected from the TV and then reconnected to the RF Switch. This will allow the signal from the antenna/cable to reach the TV when the NES is turned off.) Rear of Control Deck --- RF Switch -- 75/300 ohm converter -- VHF Screws --- (ii) If your TV has a VHF CABLE CONNECTOR connect the RF switch and NES as shown below. (Note: The existing antenna/cable to the TV should be first disconnected from the TV and then reconnected to the RF Switch. This will allow the signal from the antenna/cable to reach the TV when the NES is turned off.) Rear of Control Deck --- RF Switch --- VHF Cable Connector Note: if a VCR is already connected between the antenna and the VHF terminals on the back of your TV set, the RF Switch MUST be installed BETWEEN the VCR and the TV as shown below: (Refer to the illustrations above for your type of TV connection.) With this hook-up you are still able to record TV programs while using the NES. Antenna -- VHF in (From Antenna) VHF out (on VCR, to TV) -- RF Switch -- TV RF Switch -- Control Deck --- Connecting your NES Components. - Connecting the AC adapter to the control deck Insert the AC adapter power plug into the AC adapter jack on the back of the Control Deck. - Connecting the controllers to the control deck Both controllers are identical and may be connected to either controller socket. However, the controller connected to controller socket 1 becomes Controller 1, and the controller connected to controller socket 2 becomes Controller 2. The distinction is important when selecting and starting games, since only Controller 1 is used to select and start games. If your TV has an automatic fine tuning control (AFC), turn it off. (Use the manual fine tune dial to adjust the picture after inserting the game pak as described below.) 3. Make sure that the power switch on the Control Deck of off. Caution!! Always make sure that the power switch on the control deck is off before inserting or removing a game pak!! Always check the game pak edge connector for foreign material before inserting the game pak into the control deck!! 4. Open the Chamber Lid on the Control Deck. Insert a Game Pak into the Chamber (label facing up) and push it all the way in. Press down on the Game Pak until it locks into place and close the Chamber Lid. 5. Turn on the power switch of the NES Control Deck and push the reset button. Note: If the "reinsert" indicator light on the front of the Control Deck is flashing, it means that the game pak is not loaded correctly. In this case, turn off the Control Deck power switch and start over from step 4. Note: When the game pak is inserted properly, a colorful game display should appear on the TV screen. If it does not, or the picture is imperfect, turn the Control Deck power switch off and then on again, and press the reset button. 6. Well it might be the rf switch that is causing the problem so buy a new rf switch and remember if only works on channel 4 or channel 3 then rf switch.

Well instead of using the rf switch you could use the av cable for NES instead or
the 3 in 1 rf switch then.
If you are using a digital tv instead of a CRT style tv use the av cable instead then.

you need the latest RF converter or ask a sales associate to help you and ask them what would be best to connect it to your television

Taking your problem in a whole new direction, why don't you try purchasing an 8 or 9-pin (depending on the type of Genesis you have) DIN RCA cable. This will improve picture and sound, and you won't have to worry about malfunctioning RF converters. Your problem sounds like the RF adapters are inadequate.

Hello, Are you using a newer flat panel or and older TV? IF you are using a newer TV the picture will never look very good. IF not, did you try working with the RF adapter? Check all connections. If all else fails try to get another RF adapter to see if that helps. I remember this being a bit problematic even when these were new. Wish I had a definite answer for you! Good Luck - Dr. Know

try switching both the tv and the rf switch to ch.4, if that doesn't help make sure that there is nothing connected to the in port on the rf switch and try it again, also make sure the connector of the rf switch has a straight pin and not bent too badly, also make sure the pin does not look tarnished/corroded in any way, also check the connector at the end that connects to the nes, i would try changing the rf adapter before the console, if the power cord is in good shape everything else should be easy to find a replacement for. if you hae a snes try changing the rf adapters, or try using rca type cables, the out ports are on the side of the nes and most likely on the back or front of your tv.
