It's possible that some of the settings are set improperly on the camera. Try resetting the camera back to factory default settings and see if this makes any difference. To reset the camera - have the camera in shooting mode - go to Menu - left arrow to RESET - press Ok - highlight Yes and press Ok. This will set the camera back to factory settings. Try to take some images and see if they are still fuzzy.

Why does it take fuzzy pictures some of the time

Fuzzy pictures are usually caused by movement--either your subject or the camera. They can also be caused by the auto focus focusing on the wrong thing. If you upload a picture we could tell you which of these things is happening. Include settings which you can find in the exif files by right clicking the file and choosing properties.

How do I set the resolution on my Canon SD850?

The instructions for changing the resolution are on page 30 of the manual.
If the pictures are fuzzy, increasing the resolution won't help. The most likely causes of fuzzy pictures are as follows
1) Focus. Check to make sure the focus is on the subject. If something else in the picture is sharp while others are not, then the camera may have focused on the wrong subject.
2) Subject motion. If moving objects are fuzzier than stationary objects then you need to use a faster shutter speed (or flash).
3) Camera motion. Just because the camera is on a tripod doesn't mean it doesn't move. One philosophy says that if a tripod is light enough to be carried then it's not sturdy enough. For a compact camera like the SD850 that likely isn't the problem. However, you can still shake the camera when you press the shutter release button. Try setting the self-timer. This allows time for the vibrations to die down before snapping the picture.
In your particular case, I think we can assume that the subject isn't moving, so #2 doesn't apply. To assure proper focus, make sure the painting is flat and perpendicular to the lens axis. If the painting is tilted relative to the camera, then different parts of it will be at different distances and the camera won't be able to keep all of it in focus.
Also, make sure the front of the lens is clean.

All of the pictures taken are very fuzzy no matter what you do

check to see if a flower appears on the screen. If it does then the camera is set to macro and all your pictures except close up will be fuzzy. To switch macro off, move the ring on the front of the camera till the arrow is pointed straight down. I was having the same problem. Wasted a whole day of vacation pictures. That was what fixed my problem and I hope it fixes yours too,

Fuzzy pictures with the ge E1030

Did you change any settings ie. exposure value, shutter speed? Those could cause blurry pictures if you do not have the camera on a tripod.

White and fuzzy screen

Hey mea411,
What you should do is have the camera looked at by an authorized service technician. There is most likely something wrong with the LCD screen itself. I hope this helps!

Sincerely,
Allan

Fuzzy, cloudy pictures

As basic as it sounds, is the lens dirty? The tiny surfaces of digital cameras' lenses really affect image quality. Also check the image quality setting to ensure you're shooting at a high quality setting.
