Question about Gateway GT4016 (6528) PC Desktop

1 Answer

Startup When the machine has been shut down for any length of time, it will not start back up. Gateway tech had me remove the cpu and re-seat it, and it started. But this happens everytime it is shut down. Sent it back to gateway, they "fixed" it and sent it back. Same problem, only now it only starts after I reseat the cpu 5 or 6 times. Once it starts, no problems. Called gateway, it's now out of warranty.

Sounds like a new power supply needed...could be motherboard, but a power supply is $29 and a new motherboard could be up to $250 from GW. Good luck.

Won't start but CPU fan vibrates but will not go full blast. Intermittant

It appears you have a faulty CPU fan and it is causing the CPU to overheat and shut down.
I suggest you replace the CPU fan. remove any dust from the heatsink and put new heatsink compound on the CPU/heatsink.

Beeps on startup but no video and continues to have long beeps with no video

Check the the cpu, ram and video card are seated properly. If they all are, then the board is defective and will need to be replaced.

Computer freezes on startup or after having it on standby. If I leave it on for any extended period of time I have to manually power it down and back on to get it to work. I usually have 3 or 4 freezes...

As an initial solution, I would recommend checking to see if the cooling fan is running properly. Also, you could have a buildup of dust around the CPU/heat sink. A thorough cleaning to remove dust and dirt may well do the job.

Just as an aside, you haven't been overclocking the CPU, have you? That could be a problem.

GT4016 hit pwr button comes on flashes three

Check the USB ports for damaged contacts. If the supply powers up and then shuts down immediately, you have a critical error. Damaged USB port contacts can cause this but so can graphics cards etc. Open the machine up and remove all cards and memory sticks and unplug all the drives but LEAVE THE CPU ALONE!! Now, turn it on. If it boots and starts beeping ( which it will with no memory installed) shut it down and reinstall each item you removed one at a time and turn it on after each single thing. When it stops booting and does whats its doing now then the last thing you plugged back in is the issue.
If it still doesn't power up with everything removed then the issue is in the mainboard. If this is th case, my advice is to seek professional advice..

I get 3 beeps and no video on my gateway desktop

The beeps usually meen that the memory is either incorrect or not inserted correctly. Try removing the new memory and go back to the original configuration. Though not recommended, putting the memory in while still plugged up should not be the problem.

MY COMPUTER SHUT DOWN AFTER 20 SECOND

It's possible that there is a thermal problem that's causing the CPU to shut down to avoid damage. Make sure the CPU fan is running on startup, and that the heatsink is properly seated and secured.

If it's not a thermal problem, there are any number of other possibilities, starting with an operating system (software) fault. More information would be necessary to continue diagnosis.

Turns on, then shuts down before anything shows on monitor

I am an IT Tech of 11 years, I have found this problem and have solved this problem on the Gateway machines. Also works on the Gigabyte, ECS and Biostar motherboards in the same machine/s. It is not the memory, video, hard drive, or processor so rest assured. This is relatively an easy fix for those that are tech friendly. Remove the retarded one plug front panel power plug, remove the pins for the reset button and that does it. How you fix it from this point is up to you totally, but that does fix the problem. It is a common and frequent problem that mass producers have when developing wiring for them.
