At first my tv (Zenith, P/N IQC50H94W) had a badly messed up picture. The colors were misaligned and they could not be aligned. I began to take it apart to diagnose it, and now when i turn it on, it clicks and shuts off before the picture even comes up. I was told the green tube needs replacing. Could it have shorted out like you said, as I began to smell an electronics burning smell?

When I turn the TV on, the power light comes on for a second then shuts off by itself.

Usually, in the Panasonic projection sets that start but then shut right back off, one of the convergence IC's has shorted out and is drawing too much current. When the TV is turned on, the computer senses the extra current and shuts the set back off. The set should be serviced by a qualified tech familiar with Pansaonic projection sets.

Shuts down after 5 minutes blinks green

Once the set shuts down, wait for the unit to stop blinking. Once it stops hold in the input and menu buttons for 5 seconds. The TV will then give you an error code. A 6-1 or a 1-8 error code would indicate a bad Color wheel. Which I think is the problem you have.

My receiver shuts down frequently , wakes back after 2 or 3 sec .

do you have sufficient space around the unit? If it is in an enclosed space, has other components on top, etc, you may be overheating the receiver. Once it gets too hot it can potentially cause the issues you mention above.

If you have other components on top, try moving them to another shelf or below the receiver, and if you have a door on an entertainment center, leave the door open to help with air flow.

Picture on TV shuts down but sound still on.

If this RCA TV has a Chassis number of ITC222 then you need to call a tech to swap out the deflection circuit board for a new or rebuilt board. This RCA Chassis is a TV Techs worst nightmare to repair.

KDF-46E2000 turns off then back on by its self

* Most common would be a couple of capacitors in the power supply that are not letting the proper voltage to the lamp.
* The lamp itself is not working properly.

TV won' turn on

Solder, solder, solder! Shut down circuits protect crts to avoid permanent damage. If any of the deflection circuits are defective, or intermittent, shut down occurs. I have not only seen bad solder on deflection circuits, especially vertical, but also intermittent connections on the yokes themselves. I've also seen shorted convergence ics cause shut down. Don't forget solder connections in the power supply.

MY TV DOES NOT COME ON AT ALL

I have seen this symptom when the vertical output IC has cracked or burned out, and the set is shutting down to protect the CRT's. When you press the power button the computer clicks the main relay and the set powers up, but a fault is immediately detected and the computer shuts the relay off, giving that double click sound. The circuit should be repaired by someone with experience.

Power problem

Your brother might have a power problem since the same thing happened to both sets. The 'loud clicking' sound could also be the high voltage arcing. If this is the case there may be water condensation on the picture tube or high woltage circuits causing them to arc shutting down the set. This will happen in cold locations where the set has been brought in from the cold or if open gas heaters are being used. Once the arc starts it will carbonize(burn) the insulation. This will cause permanent damage.(sometimes)
