My 2002 Volkswagen Jetta was starting fine until I accidentally connected my battery charger clamps to the wrong post. The charger itself was not plugged in to an AC outlet but the battery still sparked and now the car wont start, but the engine will turn over. The battery light and EPC light are illuminated on the dash. The engine is a 1.8T

Take it to the dealer, the EPC warning light - and even more the failsafe run which doesn't allow you drive faster than 20mph) is an indication of serious motor troubles. They can read the ECU faultcodes, which should be a good startingpoint for troubleshooting the cause ...
You could do some basic troubleshooting like checking the air filter, the oil level, the spark plugs, etc. You didn't fill it up with bad gas, did you ? And does the engine make strange noises/vibration when running idle ? In case you fixed some obvious cause, you can dis- and reconnect the battery to erase the engine's faultcode. If it's not fixed, the EPC (and failsafe run) will simply come on again.
My advice would be not to drive it untill it's fixed to prevent more potential damage.

Check the battery out put to see if it is at least 12.25 volts(may need to have it load checked). If the battery checks good, remove battery cables and clean them real shiney, also the battery terminals, and replace them back on the battery,WARNING,DO NOT DISCONNET THE BATTERY WITHOUT PLUGING A 12 VOLT POWER SOURSE INTO THE CIGARET LIGHTER PLUG,OR EQUAL.If you do not plug in a power sourse to the car,the computer will loose all it`s memory, and will have to go to the dealer to be reflashed.
