Re: cant print in black
Do the cleaning procedure twice. Use a original brother ink cart! If you are lucky, the printhead is not clogged. If you dont see any black blocks when printing the testsheet, the head is definitly clogged. You cant clean the printhead because of an internal filter!

The black ink produces dark images while color ink produces multicoloered images. Once pictures that appear in color on the computers word documents are dispensed for printing, the color ink makes possible requests. It is impossible to request black charaters from colored ink on the printer.
For reasons known only to Brother you are unable to print ANYTHING if you are out of any color of ink. If you are out of black and need to only print in color it WILL NOT work
good day, if nothings coming up then u might need to run a maintenance check, use cleaning then test print and see if somethings changed. hope this helps, have a nice day

If when you attempt to print only with the black cartridge installed but it won't print, then this specific printer requires that color ink also be installed. Typical with most inkjets.
If your trying to only print form a tri-color in cartage and you dont have a black cartage in the 2nd slot as well you might try doing the following
I am not sure whether u can print only using one
cartridge(color) with this All-in-One. Check out the following steps nd
let me know if they have helped.
1. Remove the Black cartridge from the All-in-One.
He's not saying that the black cartridge won't print (which would warrant cleaning the heads, or messing with the cartridges) -- I have the same problem that MarkDan is having as well... no matter what you select as the output from any "Print" dialog window, the HP 21xx and 12xx series printers _always_ print in full color. You can choose Black and White, Greyscale, Color -- doesn't matter what you choose in the dialog boxes, it utterly ignores you, and will always print in color.
I have no idea why it does this, but it's eating a _ton_ of color ink for no good reason. I have searched all over the Web and on HP's site, but solution has been found.
epson.com, actually you can print using black ink only, but you have to reset the color ink for it to register as full. :) or you can freeze the ink counter using the ssc service utility before the other ink rans out. :)
