Crate PA6FX Popping noises coming through speakers. Found darkened area on board right above speaker inputs. Would like to have schematic or part description of the resistors that look charred.I tested both of them found high resistance on one no resistance on the other.

  • Anonymous May 11, 2010

Definitely need pics. I couldn't find a schematic but pictures would be necessary. One thing you could do if you can't get pics is tell us the band colors of the burned resistors...if they are thru-hole and not surface mount. Then check the resistance of each resistor and post that info as well.

Can you take a digital picutre of this? Sounds like the output jack shorted and drew lots of current (causing burned board). Take a pic and send it to me and I'll see what I can do.

    THanks,

If they are square cement power resistors they are probably 3-5 watt 300-500 ohm .... are there colored stripes on the resistors? those are probably grounding resistors, they usually are installed too close to the board, get real hot a bunch of times and then crack the solder welds. when you replace them bring up the height and make space under the resistor to keep it off of the board and put a little drop of silcone underneath to hold them in place.

Crate BX-160 Amp. Intermittent static / constant low 'raspberry' sound.

I would check C25 & 26. Make sure the solder has not broken.

Hi - when I power on teh board the speakers start clicking - at first it was a very loud popping sound but now it is just a semi loud clicking but it is constant

Make sure you use BALANCED interconnection cables and the board is powered from the SAME receptacle or source as the speaker/amp.

This board is very simple and if the source of the noise is in the unit, I would look to a problem involving the Phantom power supply. The Phantom connects to the mic inputs and if it gets noisy it will often couple into the inputs.

Unplug ALL inputs to verify it is not coming in via the mics. Does the main fader control the loudness?

Here might be your schematic:

Crate pa6fx powered mixer, powers on but when I hook speakers up to them, hear loud hissing and pops out of one of the speakers, nothing out of the other. I can hook up a mic and hear myself through the...

It is likely that there is a failure of one of the amps in the unit. It could be a cracked circuit board, bad solder, bad volume control, or a bad compnent in the power amp section for one side. HOWEVER something does NOT compute here as you can't connect more than one speaker to a 15 Watt Crate amp... Maybe you have two of these amps.

I have a crate GFX 50 and the effects come in only after about 15 minutes of play.

This is a warm up issue and can probably best be found by using circuit cooler on suspected components.

Other possible problems may be a bad solder joint or cracked circuit board.

Candle the board with a bright light to look for cracks.

Bad solder joints take experience to spot, but pay particular attention where panel mounted volume controls solder to the circuit board. Looking for the little ring around the solder menicus takes a sharp eye and good lighting. Resolder any suspected bad joints.

I have a crate cpb150 amp i want to connect it to my digitech gsp2101 via livewire stp-202 cable what is the correct way?

I can understand your confusion... and a lot depends how you are going to use this. There are some caveats regarding the connections,
If you use the 1/4 outputs on the GSP, there is a speaker modeling like function that is NOT available, that IS available IF you use the XLR outputs.
The STP is an "Insert Snake" which is not really what you want as it is intended to send and receive (audio going both directions in the cable.
If you want that speaker function, then you should get two XLR to 1/4 TRS cables and go from the XLR's on the GSP to the Left and Right inputs on the back of the Crate. Your audio or guitar then is connected to the GSP guitar input.
If you connect the guitar to the crate and then use the STP, Plug the TRS single connector into the Left/Mono/send/rtn on the Crate. The Send cable of the Y should go to the Send jack on the back of the GSP and the return should go to the left return jack of the GSP. This connection I would NOT recommend as it will be noisier and you will lose the stereo effect capabiltiy since the effect is inserted as a mono.

I believe you would be happier with using the XLR's to carry left and right to the Crate and run your inout to the GSP. In short, you have the wrong cable to do the best job.

NO sound through the AMP even though the power light comes on

Not a fuse. First thing, to check your speaker (amp unplugged, of course), touch the + and - speaker connections to a 9V battery. If you don't hear a pop sound then your speaker is blown. Thus, no output sound. If speaker is OK, then the output IC is your problem.

Plugging line level into my crate TX15. all inputs sound distort

guitar amps are all set to a low Z resistance configuration. wich are made for guitar only. make sure you are using the right cables.
you need sheilded guitar cable not unshielded speaker cable in many cases these cables look exactly the same. look at your cable look for the words speaker or instrument. you need the instrument cable. if you still have that problem. then you may just not be satisfied with the quality of the amp it self.
