Lens does not zoom in

Hi ,

I have been using this camera for the past 2 YRs and I have encountered the first problem today.
When i Power On the camera , the Lens just zooms out to full capacity (16X) and I am not able click any picture in any of the modes.
Turning the zoom in button also does not retract the lens.
I have tried removing the batteries, remving the memory card and also tapping the AV input area.
Nothing is solving the issue.
Could anybody throw some light on why this happeneign and how I should rectify the same.
Thanks

This is not a common error on canon digital. This is caused due to possible short in zoom control circuit (main pcb). At normal use, if the lens does not retract due to mechanical jam, when the zoom control button is pressed, lens error 18 message supposed to be displayed. Since control circuit is shorted and faulty, error 18 message was not displayed. The remedy for this problem probably requires a replacement of a main pcb. Replacing a main circuit board may run around $100-140. -James

I have a Canon EOS 550D camera fitted with a Canon Zoom Lens EF-S 18-200mm lens. I bought both together sometime early in 2010 from London Camera Exchange, Nottingham. I am not in Nottingham at the moment,...

Just a thought - are your Image Stabilizer and Auto Focus switches On or Off?
Might be worth experimenting with them.
Otherwise, sorry, can't help.
May be necessary to contact your vendor.

Model number and brand info are very important to recognise a product to provide any advise over internet support.

You are correct. The lens is faulty and there's nothing you can do to fix it as it needs professional attention. Contact the seller immediately to try and get a return authorisation and refund.

Lens keeps getting stuck/needs a good tug to zoom past 25 HELP!

Hi Rachael_amor, If the lens will not zoom on the camera will it off the camera? If not then it has some grit, dirt, and the like in the lens. You could attempt to vacuum around the zoom however, I suspect it will need to go in to Nikon. That lens is not well weather sealed, it is a inexpensive consumer lens.

I have a lens issue (possibly jammed from lens cleaner i used?)

Hi,
A nice lens brush is what you clean a lens with.
Solvents in the spray you used could have done a couple of bad things.
1. Carried muck into the zoom mechanism.
2. Melted/dissolved part of the zoom mechanism.

Either way, unless you are brave and capable enough to dismantle it, it needs to go back to service for a clean out/re-jig.

Sorry for the news,
dave.

Zoom Lens Deployment

Hi Spinks... your problem seems uncommon... i have been using the same model for around 2 yrs and never caused such problem.
Probably some problem in the machinism... better to consult a service engg. if still under warranty.
Thanks.

The Power Zoom appears to be locked at 80mm.

(I just cut-n-pasted the comment into the solution so this shows up as a solved problem in searches.)

"I've found the solution!
Just goes to show that sometimes it's worth simply calling the importer's service department, who told me in 30 seconds!!
Hold the zoom twist-ring and push, or click it up or down, depending on which way you are holding the lens.
So simple; I even accused him of not knowing what he was talking about.. and of course apologised profusely when it suddenly happened."
