Printer installation hp deskjet 5550 printer trying to install to Toshiba A100 SAtellite laptop. HP says problem is PORTS. Have tried several methods with them. Still cant get printer to print but printers test page prints. Do I need to try a new cable or are the ports not adequate?

    Not sure if it is the # given. I know it is an A100 satellite.SK4!!

    Not sure if you read the part about my contact with HPChat online. I had difficulty trying to do the execution you suggested. I spent 4 days and many hours on chatlines with them and probably got 7 or 8 different technicians. I had to try different nos like 990c deskjet, 550c and try all dorts of things. Like plug unplug, try ports, redo printer testpage. It was established that the hardware is okay. I had to do default, undo, print spooler, stop, start,restart and all kinds of repeat things. The final one told me to go to Toshiba and ask about ports or get a new cable. I have not dealt with this issue in a calm, patient way. I found it quite exasperating. I am not very computer savvy, being a senior and low income. Toshiba warranty for computer just expired so I cant get any help from them. Then I founf Fixya so that is why I am trying. I cant remember correctly but that download you suggested maynot be still available.

    I am on my way to a computer place to get a cable because with shipping costa does not make a great saving. I called local store here. They have one and will ask if he might try for me the download you suggested. Did not find it on alternative site you gave me. As I said my patience has been tried. If its as simple as downloading from the HP site why wouldnt all those people who served me on the chat line for HP deskjets have tols me.? Any ways, thank you. Will get back when I have new cable. Life was simpler before computers in many ways. Just crank the phone and ask the operator for 7 ring 12.!

    went to local computer store and repair. advised not to spend money on a new cable, not likely the problem says he, his advice, go to Staples and buy a new one rather than spending money on trying to solve problem with this

    it is working. i had downloaded that site you gave me. i had 2 actually. one didnot seem to have any info. the second one did. so i had to figure out how to get to it and open it. i followed all the instructions. didnot work. went back,checked ports, realized i should try a different port choce. IT WORKED> so, you were helpful.
    Prior to this execution i had read there was no longer an installation available for this site on one of the hp pages. I went back to chat online with HP. He had me put in a deskjet 990c, then do all the stuff that they had told me to do in the other 7 hour sessions I had with them. So I dont know whats happening at their end but I went through a huge amount of time trying to get something to happen. So.... no need for a cable, just some better paper .So... your first response was the right one. Maybe HP could hire you as a consultant!
    One final question. Should I press the power button to OFF when I sleep? Am afraid to lose what has been accomplished, but ir should be okay right?

The first thing I would try is to install the latest drivers for the printer. If that doesn't work, let me know.

    Sounds like you've tried all the USB ports on your pc and still no luck?

    Here's a different link for the drivers, but it sounds like you probably already done that.

    The next step is to try a different cable.
    Here's a really cheap one on ebay.

    Well a new printer would obviously fix the problem. So if you want to do that, it's ok. But I have seen cables fail before.

    Glad to hear that switching ports fixed your problem.

    You should keep the printer off whenever you're not using it, there's no reason to leave it on.

I understand that you have already tried installing several Audio Drivers from Internet. However, please try installing the appropriate one from the links below. If you have already tried installing this, please post back with the correct version of the Operating System installed in the Computer.

You can download the Drivers from the below link. Please select the correct Operating System.

Please restart the Computer after installing the Drivers for the settings to take the effect. Also please try increasing and decreasing the volume to check if that work.

Have you check your color cartridge if they are properly installed.

Make sure your are not using a refill cartridge.

Replace your tri-color cartridge with original an HP tri-color cartridge.

Since Hp have Vista driver to your install the not plug the printer...install the driver that you downloaded (run the program as Administrator)..after you install, if the installation ask for restart..restart your computer...after restart and the whole system finish his task on loading driver and dll ..then plug in your will pop up message found new hardware. click next and choose automatic find the driver.

what Cable are you using to connect?
USB a and b?
parallel port to USB? if this you need to download the driver too.

I'm having a problem with my all-in-one printer

I have heard of this problem several times. Try another USB port (I'll assume it is USB and not parallel).
If that does not work, pay the $35.00 to HP and have them walk you thru their steps to repair. NOTE: HP software/drivers of-late are *extremely* finicky to keep on-line! Esp. with the scanning part. Want a very good, inexpensive, AIO printer that just *works*!?!?!? Buy anything from Canon. They're hardware is exceptional, their software is not intrusive (like HP), and it just...... works!
