What is not working? The printer or the cartridge? If it's the cartridge, try this. fold a paper towel in 4ths, dampen it and place on a flat surface. Blot the cartridge several times on the towel. You should get blots of black with the black cart. and three colors with the color or photo cart. If not... replace. If the printer carriage just won't move and you're shure you have power.. time for a new printer.

The product software print setting is probably designated as grayscale. Follow these steps to check this setting:
In the software application you are trying to print from, click File
, and then click Print
. The Print dialog box opens.
Make sure your printer is selected, then click Preferences
. The printer Preferences dialog box opens.
Select the Color
tab, then make sure that the Print in grayscale
option is not selected.
Step 2: Check ink levels NOTE:
you have installed a refilled or remanufactured print cartridge, or a
cartridge that has been used in another printer, the ink level indicator
will be inaccurate or unavailable.
Open the Printer Toolbox
. There are two ways to open it:
Open HP Solution Center
, select the Settings
menu, then the Print Settings
submenu, and finally the Printer Toolbox
If the HP Solution Center
method does not work, open Printers and Faxes
in the Windows Control Panel
, then right-click your printer icon and click Properties
. Click Printing Preferences
. Click the Services
tab, then the Service This Device
The Printer Toolbox
opens. Click the Estimated Ink Level
tab. A cartridge might be running out of ink even if the graphic shows
ink remaining (see the note at the start of this section). Lines or
streaks always appear in printouts when the cartridges begin to run out
of ink. Replace print cartridges that are out of ink or low on ink.
This eror usually mean that the printer cartridge has not been installed correctly. Try re-installing the cartridge.
This error can also be generated by a logic fault within the printer.. if this is the case, replace the printer..
trying another new cartridge can be expensive so try and get a second hand cartridge, maybe from a friend and try that one..
Otherwise, replace the printer..
Sounds like the printer thinks the cartridge is empty.
Old PSC units had a 3 cartridge memory - you kept 3 cartridges and cycled them to trick the printer into thinking it had just received a brand new cartridge, rather than a refilled one.
I know this might sound silly but there is pieces of plastic on the bottom of the cartridges that cover the holes to keep them from drying out, make sure they are removed and then reinstall the cartridges and see if that helps.
