My mother in law gave us a fairly new window unit for our home but the air doesn't blow cold, can I add freon to the unit if needed and if so how do I do that? Could it just not be cold because it has sat unused in her basement for about a year?
Hi, Sitting for a year or more don't hurt them but bugs dirt and water could. Depending a lot on the size and quality of the unit, there are usually no charge ports on a window unit and the parts and tools to charge it would probably be about the price of a new unit. If the fan motor is running and the compressor is running and it wont cool, I would call around and see what someone would charge to repair the leak and recharge it. The price would be better if you delivered it to their shop for repair. If the fan runs with no compressor, probably needs a thermostat or switch. No fan, Needs a fan motor or has something blocking the fan motor from turning, stick, dirt daubers nest, whatever. In most cases though, if its not a simple fix, A new unit would probably be your best bet. Hope this helps. kstfas
