I always used a serial cable which is serial on both ends, my Artista 165 takes only a serial plug and my computer has a serial port also. My shorter serial cable came with the Artlink software in the box, but later I ordered a 30 feet long one on the web from a cable seller for the distance needed that time between the sewing machine and my computer. Later I bought a Bernina Reader/Writer box which also uses the serial cable, way easier to transfer designs to a Bernina Personal Design card.

How do I connect a 180e serial cable to my usb computer when Artlink and CPS software specify serial port?

I've not successfully managed this ... trouble-is that although you can get USB-to-serial converters, most computers that only have USB ports do not properly 'recognise' COM ports, which is what your Artlink software expects to talk to. I still use an old PC with a 'proper' 9-pin serial port on the back in order to talk to the old Artista range of machines. One of the drawbacks of a 'throwaway' PC industry that expects the rest of the world to continually update everything in response to new interface standards!

How do I connect my 165 to a computer with USB ports only?

Use the free Artlink software from Bernina. The cconnector... use a USB to Serial port converter cable. Best Buy has them *Dynex brand). Worked for me on an Artista 180.

Trying to connect a USB to the serial port of a Bernina Sewing Machine (Bernina 170). Has been working for a couple of years and has stopped all of a sudden. Does not work on and XP PC, Vista or win 7....

The Dynex adapter does not have any numbers on it. It was the one that is only about a foot in length and has a square center piece that houses the conversion electronics. Standard 9 pin RS-232 male plug on one end and the standard USB plug on the other end. I purchased it within the last month at BestBuy here in Austin TX.

USB to Serial port cable for Bernina Artista 180

Just happen to be sitting in front a Bernina 180 at this very moment - with the connecting cable attached to a Keyspan USA-19HS Adapter. It is a current adapter available from either Keyspan (www.keyspan.com) or any number of computer retailers - physical or online. Seems to run around $30.00 just about everywhere. Auction sites may have bargain. Worked like a charm on an older XP computer as I was able to test the older software I had due to it having the necessary parallel port the the older dongle. While I am fairly certain this combination would also work on my Windows 7 computer, I am unable to test it as I have not come across a parallel adapter that will work with the older software parallel dongle. I've had other programs/peripherals that utilize usb to serial adapter (on my Windows 7) that have worked fine, so I suspect this would also be the case.

Hope this helps. If you have specific questions, please don't hesitate to contact us.

Happy stitching,

I need to order one I lost mine bernina 180 cable

This is for connecting the embroidery machine to the PC?

You will need a cable with USB port A on one end and USB port B on the other - both male.

You can get this style of cable at an electronics store.

If this is not what you mean, then you need a Bernina dealer to order one for you.

I need to hook up my bernina 180e sewing machine to my new laptop with windows 7. There is no connection port to plug in my dongle. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can make this system work?

I am assuming that you are talking about the cable from the sewing machine to the computer...

Here is the disappointing answer. You cannot hook the 180e up to a Windows System 7 computer or Vista. I have an older computer with XP on it just for my sewing machine. If you want to hook up the sewing machine to a computer that does not have a 9-pin, you will need to buy an adapter that goes from 9-pin to USB. I bought one from Belkin, and you may need to buy it online. It costs about $30.

I have the embroidary software version 4 that has a dongle. It will also not work on Vista or System 7 and the Bernina dealer says I can upgrade for $400.

To hook up my laptop computer to my bernina, I need to use a USB to serial 9pin cable but it 'talk' to the sewing machine. I used a 9pin 9pin cable to hook up from my old desk top PC. What am I doing...

You need to get an adapter to convert the 9-pin to a USB port. I have one from Belkin. Once you get that set up, you will need to check the com port for the driver and make sure it is 1, 2, 3, or 4. If you have Vista or Windows 7, your softwware will not work. My dealer wants $400 to upgrade. I kept my old computer just for my sewing machine.

Connection problem with computer to sewing machine and reader/writer

Hello,
It is not true that the 180 is not compatible with new software.
I'm owning a artista 180 from 2002 and just installed the software designer V5+ on a laptop with windows vista.
The only problem was that there was no serial port on the laptop, now I have a new cable with USB ans serial output and the software works very well !!
When you contact Bernina you will get the same answer.
