Hi. i would say most probaly that there is fungi in the blue cooling fluid.. replaced the fluid in mine yesterday and now she is 100 percent better. there are a few online how to's around but the best i have found is this one
as for the darkness a simple tweak of the crt's power can fix this. its the little pot usualy near or connected to the same part as the focus.. but be warned it is very easy to go too far and blow it...
as the tubes get older they alsso get burn in on the face of the crt.. this does not mean that it has to be visible (i have seen some with giant keno numbers on them) it can be just a nice even patch that will reduce the brightness.

Sounds like the coolant in the CRTs need to be changed, Blue is always the first to congeal followed by green. Its actually a easier repair. I will post a link where you can get the phillips coolant replacement kit which contains the coolant required and an instructional CD with pictures of the process step by step. Heres the link its listed under the repair kit category. http://servicemanuals.vstore.ca/
no those tvs came with a black otuer screen that have rough ridges . If your screen is blue, someone may have replaced it with a dark colored plastic. You can get replacement screens at the following link, They are exspensive though. http://servicemanuals.vstore.ca/
Heres the best way to set a phillips screen controls. Go into the picture controls and set picture or contrast to roughly 75%, then set brightness to 50% and then set the color level completely off. Then adjust the screen with the 3 color controls untill you recieve the best black and white picture as possible. If you are unable to achieve a good black and white picture change the coolant in the green and blue tubes. But if you can get a good black and white picture stop there then turn your color level back up and the picture should be correct. Let me know if you need further assistance.
This sounds like the vertical output IC has stopped working. If the vertical pulses are missing at the yokes then the picture shuts down to protect the CRT's from being burned by the intense thin white line through the center of the picture. I have seen many of those TDA vertical output IC's fail.
Open up the front of the set and find the screen controls and perform a grey scal alighnment by adjusting the red , blue , and green screen controls but be carefull and make sure you adjust them evenly or the picture will not look right. Good Luck
The Picture tubes(not bulbs) do and probably are weak. There replace should only be done by a trained service person. One reason would be the hI Voltage issues related to the crt's, as these tubes store alot of HI voltage even after its unplugged for a while, and another reason would be that these tube can very easy implode then explode and that wouldnt be a pretty sight. Third would be the alighnment involved after all three tubes are replace. There ba cross hatch generator and alot of time involved with the alighnment. Please seek a pro to assit you when your ready to spend at least 900 TO 1000 bucks. Good Luck
