Hi I have a venturer portable dvd player pvs166w. I loaned it to someone who tried to change the region to region free and when I got it back it does not except discs. I loads for quite a while then display 'invalid disc'. Is it faulty or can it be changed. I have looked up on the net and changed it to region 2 but it still comes up with same error.

I have this dvd player for +/- 10 months now, I have never made changes to the region formatting but recently it started displaying "wrong region" when loading new discs purchased/hired with no. "2" region code. It still plays other discs with no. "2" pal region codes as well as "all" region code discs, can this problem be solved?
Regards

This brand suffers badly from no valid disc etc. I have two units and both went faulty, I returned them last year to Venturer Canada and they were repaired for 45USD each. Guess what - faulty again. I have just added an in car Media HDD (put your films on a hard drive, no more changing DVD's mid journey). The screens and sound generally are fine but the reading of discs - hit and miss at best. Look on ebay for a "Media Hard Drive 2.5"

Re: venturer dvd problem
You can sometimes find discs on the internet for failry cheap that changes the region of the disc before the disc loads. So you might try and find a "region changer disc" on the net.
Otherwise, lots of times, once a players region has been changed more than once or twice it will not allow another.
If you have already changed it back to region 2 and it is still not working, you might have a bad dvd player now.
Hate to be the barer of bad news.

This question is one of my most frequent on FixYa.
There is no "region-free" or "region 0" setting for any DVD player/recorder. Only DVD media can be region free. Every single offer to set a player or recorder to region free that I am familiar with has been a scam. The reason for this is to prevent DVD piracy.
Most DVD players and recorders (SONY included) have provisions for making a maximum of THREE changes to their region code. A fourth attempt at changing the region code will result in the player/recorder being turned into a paperweight.
Bkhopkins- in your case, you will be able to change your region code from region 1 (USA) to region 4 (AUS). Doing so will leave your player with 2 more changes, maximum. Check your manual for the procedure and the exact number of changes you are allowed. Please be aware that after you change to Region 4, any Region 1 DVD's will not be viewable unless you switch back, which will use another of your three changes.
You have an alternative to salvage your DVD's by downloading a program called DVD Shrink. This program is capable of removing the region code from your DVDs and saving them as region-free at the sacrifice of some quality. You will at least the be able to view your US DVD's without sacrificing a region code change on your player.
Though there may be information available on the internet for your requested region code hack, it is against Fixya's Terms Of Use to assist with your question.

This hack was found on the internet. I hope this information helps you with your problem.
Navigate manu to select Region Code and select Region 9

Confirm Region change by pressing ANGLE then DISPLAY (still with tray open) and you will see a long string of letters and numbers ending with R9. (if successful).
Power off.
The "venturer" pvs 1371 is marketed under several brand names in different chain stores, not surprising that it was hard to find, it is also 'durabrand' 'pacific' 'Lennox' 'Alco' 'funai' 'Emerson' 'Sylvania' 'Symphonic' 'Orion' 'Maxell' 'Resonance' 'Initial technologies' in various incarnations, and not all the manufactuer's rebranded items are available in each brand, and not all of each brand are from the same manufacturer
1. Switch on the DVD player. 2. Open the disc tray, and leave it open. 3. On your remote key in the following number: 81328 4. Then press the ENTER key a number of times till region 9 comes up. 5. Press the MENU button on your remote. 6. Finally close the tray.
