Hi My camera was working fine a few weeks ago, but when I went to use it a few days ago i noticed a problem. I press the shutter button and normally the picture that I have just taken would show up on my lcd screen for a couple of seconds, but now the lcd works fine except for when I take a picture- Instead of showing an image of the picture I just took it appears black for a couple of seconds instead. When I try to view my pictures on my camera or on my computer the new ones all appear black, but my previous pictures from a few weeks ago are still viewable. I have tried changing the batteries and tried using different memory cards hoping that was the problem but neither solved the problem. Please advise! thanks!
No, my camera does not have a lens cover to detach. There is no grinding noise. Thanks for the suggestions though, but no luck! No, my camera does not have a lens cover to detach. There is no grinding noise. Thanks for the suggestions though, but no luck!

I've tried taking photos on every different setting there is, factory reset, memory card format, adjusting image quality.
I tried it all, but crazily enough, the camera will still record video and that's fine, the picture is clear as.
I can see through the LCD screen with no problems, but all my pictures are black!Same problem, it's so frustrating.

I think there may be a hardware problem. look for a possibly a hardware manual or a way to reset the camera to factory.I think there may be a hardware problem.

The problem you are describing is a problem with a sensor inside the lens assembly. It seems to have failed and needs to be replaced. Following are the instructions to send your camera to Olympus for service.
Olympus will charge a flat rate repair fee for this product if beyond the one year factory warranty or the warranty is voided. The cost is $61 plus your local sales tax. This covers parts and labor, factory cleaning and diagnostic check, 6 month warranty and the cost of shipping the product back to you is all included in that price.
it would appear that the lcd screen has malfunctioned and would need repair.... you can try power cycle by taking batteries out and press and hold power button down for 10 secs, draining all power out of camera, then put the batteries back in and try again
my olympus FE-170 screen won't show any picture. All other things are fine and working the screen just won't show pictures taken or a picture i'm aout to take. the camera is about 2 years old i've had no problems with it till now. Can someone pleeeaaasssse tell me their is an easy solution to this.
Format your camera's internal memory and also format any memory cards you insert.
Use a program called Recover4All to see exactly what is in your camera's internal memory.
Then insert a memory formatted memory card and take some pictures. see if they will upload.
I had the same exact problem. The lens is not extending out fully or correctly, probably has broken or damaged gear or gears and needs to be replaced. Expensive repair done by Olympus. It is a very tricky and fragile repair on your own, requiring micro screwdrivers and soldering tool. I replaced my own lens but it was hard to find one.
