Good solution vallis! I have solved many of my disc reading errors this way. Now, i always try this first and it works 9/10. A good suggestion for future reference for you nannytojack is to make backup discs of all new programs and use the backup in a new labelled csse, and put the original away to keep it pure and safe!!! You can also try uninstalling the program and reinstalling it, as they can get corrupted files very occasionally and prevent proper reading.

Its possible that the disc has gotten too rough to be read right. Something you can try doing is making a copy of the disc if you have a CD burner. Sometimes the software that CD burners use are a little more sensitive than just the regular windows reading software. Make a copy of the disc then try using it like you did the orginal. Just be sure you keep the orginal copy, just in case.

Sony vaio lcd screen turns black after start up

graphics card software fault. start the pc and get it to bring up the start menu where you see options such as safe mode, usually holding down f8 when you boot. (If all else fails whilst windows is loading hold down your power button to power it off then it should automatically ask you what to do.)
select restore to known good configuration.
If that does cure it boot to safe mode and do a system roll back (restore) to an earlier time when it did work
If that doesn't work, also in safe mode you can try removing the graphics card drivers and forcing it to load windows default drivers. then update from the website.
If nothing works, not even safe mode then you'll need to use your windows disks or recovery discs. If you fear losing everything then try downloading and burning a ubuntu live disc on another PC and use that to load your laptop then copy and back up your files to another drive or usb stick using the ubuntu operating system.

I have a black screen on my Toshiba Satellite P 35 - S605 laptop. This just happened suddenly, one day it was working then, nothing. I have tried hooking to an external monitor and there is still nothing....

HI There,

If you're getting a black screen with an external monitor your video card has failed. The odds are high that on the Toshiba, if it has an actual video card with committed VRAM, the card will be soldered to the motherboard and the replacement of the motherboard will be necessarry.

I really wish I had better news for you.

My lap top turns on but the screen stays blank. its on but nothing shows not even a start menu

Restart your computer.

When it reloads, look for the F commands at the bottom.

You'll have to read this quick as it does not stay long.

Once you have noted which commands are available, restart again, and as soon as you see them, push the button (start before this screen appears).

This will bring you into the setup (system config) and from there you will press F9 then select "set default settings). Move to the right through each menu and do this procedure (pressing F9). When you get to exit, press F9, select "set default settings) then, press the down arrow key, and select "exit and save settings".

The computer will automatically restart. If your screen still does not present the OS (can't see anything), press Ctrl. Alt. F11.

If this does not work, open your cd drive, insert the os disc, and restart the computer. When the disc starts, you should be brought to the opttion of re-installing or "repairing" the OS.

You want to repair. This should help you fix your monitor issue.

Please let me know if you need any further assistance.

I cant get my ibook g4 to run it turns on with blinking folder

Blinking ? mark folder means that your OS can't be found. Take out your RAM underneath the keyboard and re-insert and try again. Nothing? Install a different new RAM chip and try again. Nothing? Install your disc 1 install disc, power down, wait a few seconds, now press the power button to turn on, now press and hold the option button, until your disc 1 shows up, select it, and bring your pointer to the right arrow on the screen and press enter. Now your booting from the disc 1. Go to disc utility folder at the top of the screen and select your hard drive and then select repair disc permissions. Then shut down and reboot when finished. Nothing? Your hard drive is fu.k.d-Try re-installing the OS. Nothing? Your hard drive is really fu.k.d-You need a new hard drive. Installing a new hard drive in the iBook is a *****. You may want to pay someone to install a hard drive or you can just get a new laptop.
