Vent and lights do not work on over the range microwave
Was replacing lightbulbs in our Amana MVH210W and shorted a wire. Neither the lights nor the vent now work. Found a fuse and it is good. What am I missing?
Re: vent and lights do not work on over the range...
Check for another fuse. Check all electrical connections for burns. Did you check fuse with a meter or just look at it? Don't trust what it looks like.

Is this a countertop microwave or an over-the-rang (OTR) microwave? If it's a countertop model, you need to completely remove the outer case to get to the lightbulb. If it's and OTR microwave, there usually is an access cover located behind the grill vent. You can remove that grille vent by removing the 2 to 4 screws above the grill vent. Then either slide the grill vent 1/4" to the left to remove it, or else (depending on the model), just pull out the top of the grill vent, followed by the bottom. Then you should be able to see the lightbulb access cover. Usually there is 1 screw that you have to remove. But unplug the microwave before you to any further! Now remove the screw, lift up and remove the cover, and you should be able to get to the light bulb.
We see and repair this a lot. The problem is on the controller assembly.
There is a video here showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.
This light failure often occurs when a bulb goes out and the filament shorts, or when the bulbs are removed or installed without first unplugging the oven from the power line. Either can cause such a failure on the controller.
The lights can can be inoperable or stuck on or stuck in "night light" mode. Sometimes this will similarly affect the fan operation or inside light, too.
The magnetron is more than likely the problem, or the inverter board if oven is 7 years old or less. If you have a digital meter you can do a rough test on the magnetron, unplug microwave, set meter to ohms, disconnect one wire from magnetron and put the test leads across too points, if reading is .2ohms or less it is good, but if the test shows infinity or open the magnetron is bad, keep in mind it may have a short making the reading misleading.
probably caused a short while replacing the bulb(s) and, causing damage to the circuit board. pull the board out and carefully check for burned foil traces; and rebridge with solder. it may or may not work. always unplug the microwave when replacing the range lamps.
No! But it will need to be repaired. Did you wrap the potatoes in tin foil? The reason for the smoke needs to be found and repaired. Smoking means a short or a part shorted, failed, or wires touching another wire that did not blow any fuss. That is not good. Trained technicians can help the mfg improve their products if they find the problem and report it to the Mfg. LOL
I didn't find the installation instructions for that model, but I found
them for a couple of models that are likely very close from that era
and may be good enough to help you.
If it needs work or a new charcoal filter, etc., you can find
helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full
model number from the tag on the oven here.
