Question about Canon PIXMA MP830 All-In-One InkJet Printer

MAC OS X Canon MP830

I have recently purchased an Apple Mac and a Canon MP830. The Mac seems to have problems with the software that is provided. Through a combination of downloading what I can from the disc and the internet I am able to print but the documents are very small and only take up approx. 1/4 of an A4 page. I have had some success by telling the print setting I am prinitng to A3 but the text is still small and the page is still not fill - i.e. this is a quick fix but far from ideal. I have not been able to implement the scanning software. Since both purchases are new, I don't believe I can be the only problem customer. Welcome any advice on either of these issues. thanks Steve

    Thanks for the reply.

I have tried from several applications - Safari, Mail and MS Office for Mac (Word and Excel) - all with the same problem.

The printer is selected from Bonjour Printers list in the drop down box in the print window.

The test page from the URL comes out the same as well.

I have downloaded the driver which I note is dated 2006-11.
When I add a printer it takes me to the printer browser.
The drop down box "print using" is greyed out with 'please selet a driver or printer model"
If I choose autoselect it thinks for a while before returning to the same greyed out box.
If I look at the list there is no MP830 driver.
I have tried a couple of the other Canon drivers but without success.

Btw something I haven't mentioned - i am using the printer via my wireless airport connection.

I have a Macbook and an MP830 and with the updated system software the printer is printing pages at 1/4 of the size and I cant seem to fix the problem! It wasn't there from the start and the only thing that I can think of is that there is a problem between the latest system software and the canon MP830?

Any help would be greatly appreaciated!

Problems scanning with PIXMA MP830. Printing and copying work fine, but it won't scan. I press "SCAN" then select "save to PC" then "scan from platen" then press "start---color" and nothing happens.

Gazzards, First, what application are you printing from? Some applications (TextEdit for example) modify the size of the print job (scaling) to fit the size if the window on the screen. So, if I open TextEdit and type "THIS IS MY TEXT" and print it, it's fair. If I resize the window to full screen by clicking the green circle and reprint (with no other changes) the text comes out minute. If you've only tested one application printing, try another. Another bit of printing information in Mac OS X: You can manage printers in a different way using your browser and pointing to this URL: http://localhost:631/printers/ I use this to print a test page for printers, and it's a good test for your situation because it does not involve the print dialog settings. Just find the printer you use and click the "Print Test Page" button next to it. Does it come out the correct size? Please let me know if this helps.

I think this is a driver problem. This looks like the most important item to download from Canon's site:
MP830 Printer Driver Ver. 4.8.2 (Mac OS X)
My recommendation is to remove the drivers you have installed (if they've provided a way to do this) and to install this driver from Canon's web site.

    Start here:
Click the Drivers & Downloads tab
Click the Drivers / Software link

The easiest way to make sure you're using the new driver is to remove the printer and recreate it:
    Utilities -> Printer Setup Utility
Select the printer and click Delete
Then click Add to add a new printer and select the driver you just installed.

Whenever I reply to a post here, I'm worried that I won't be able to resolve the problem ... and for the most part, only problems without responses are looked at by other members. So, if this doesn't help, you may want to repost this problem (and I'll let someone else answer it). Understand that I want to help, I just may not be able to in this situation.

I purchased an MP830 a couple months ago and used it with my old G4 MacMini. The printer installed and worked fine. A week ago I purchased a new Intel MacMini. I have installed both the driver from the software CD and also tried a newer driver from the Canon web site(4.8.2). Neither worked. Watching the print queue one would see the job start and then simply stop. I removed these and installed Gutenprint-5.1.3. It worked for a day and then stopped. I tried various combinations of reinstalling and restarting both the computer and the printer, and both the generic and Canon drivers. I was not been able to get Gutenprint to work again. A few times I got USB error 64. I finally tried changing the USB driver to USBTB 1.0.15 but it does not have a driver for the MP830. However it allowed me to manually select the MP830 Gutenprint driver and this combination seems to be working. Both Gutenprint 5.1.3 abd USBTB 1.0.15 are available at

Recently upgraded to 10.7.5 on my Mac. Now my Cannon Pixma 830 will not scan. It will still print from my computer, however.

Hi, Nona!
I'm sorry to hear that your Canon printer isn't scanning! This has actually happened many times for me in the past. Your printer is probably having issues and this occurred coincidentally afterwards. Canon printers seem to enjoy to have problems. Let's try to fix this.

1. Try restarting your printer. Press the power button and wait until it turns off. Then, unplug the printer for 30 seconds. Then, plug it back in. If necessary, press the power button to turn it back on. Wait a few minutes, then try scanning. If this didn't work, keep reading.

2. Try scanning through your printer. Download the Canon printer program for your printer. Here is the link:
Go to Drivers & Downloads and select "Software". Then choose "Easy-PhotoPrint EX Ver.4.5.0 (Windows)". Agree to the terms and select "Download".

CANON MP830 wont print PDF from email

It may be that you need an Apple/Mac Driver for the Canon Printer. Check with MAC and then suggest you check with Canon . If I come up with further solutions I'll be in touch. Good Luck.

How do I get the set up cd for Pixma mp830

You may download the Canon software and drivers from Canon Support Drivers PIXMA MP830

If you really want the CD, contact the Canon for your country. They should be able to provide a CD, though you may have to pay for shipping.

Hello, l have recently purchased a macbook air laptop and l am trying to figure out how to get it to print to my canon Pixma MP480 printer. Any suggestions??

You need the printer/driver software. In your Apple system prefs they have a lost of printer/drivers available - you need to check if yours is on there, you might have to download from Canon.

Problem installing ImageMixer 3 software on my Mac.

I just got off the phone with Canon support. I have a Canon HF 100 and was experiencing the same problems. If you have the newest version of iMovie (in iMovie '08....but I would bet '09 would work fine as well...'06 is questionable), you shouldn't have any trouble getting the files off your camera onto your Mac.

1. Plug in the camera and turn the power on (or plug in the memory card via a card reader)
2. Open iMovie
3. Wait a few seconds to see if your camera connection automatically opens, if it doesn't, click on the image of the camera on the far left side of the middle bar in iMovie.
4. It should recognize the video information you have plugged in at this point. If it doesn't, in the bottom of the import window, see if you can select a camera from the drop down list next to where it says "camera" in the bottom left.

I was told by the tech support people that I need to update my Final Cut Express software in order to read the video files, however I think they're wrong because I'm pretty sure I have the newest version. I also just found this information on Apple's website useful (see the video entitled "Built in AVCHD"): If you're using Final Cut Express 4, go to File -> Log & Transfer (or hit SHIFT + COMMAND + 8 on your keyboard) and if your camera/memory stick is plugged in, it should show a list of your files right there. Much better than iMovie.

Here is some information on the stuff I am using if it's useful:

iMovie '08 version 7.1.4
Final Cut Express 4 version 4.0.1
Canon HF 100 Digital HD Camcorder
Mac OS X Leopard Version 10.5.6

Hope this is helpful. I doubt that I will check back to this forum, so please email any questions you might have (I may or may not be able to answer) to [email protected] I would recommend, assuming you have a Mac, going out and buying iMovie '09 ($39 - $79 depending where you buy it), Final Cut Express ($100 - $300 depending where you buy it), or Final Cut Studio 2 ($400 - $1200 depending where you buy it) before spending money on another software that won't let you do as much. The Imagemixer 3 software that your camera came with is supposed to let you basically do the same things, but doesn't work on Mac. It looks like you can buy the Mac version from Pixela...but I would encourage you to contact Canon or Pixela support first and demand a free one, since you paid so much for the camcorder and should be entitled to the software.

Canon tech support was pretty useful as well: 1-800-828-4040. I only had to wait about 5 minutes. (The total call was around 15 mins).

Good luck.

Wireless printing

The MP830 does not include the ability to do Wireless Network printing. You can however, connect this printer to one of your Windows or Mac PCs and share it on the network, which is wireless, therefore accomplishing the same thing.

1) Install the Drivers and Software that came with your Printer.
2) Go to the Control Panel > Printers & Faxes
3) Right-click your printer and click "Sharing"
4) Choose Share this Printer, and give it a name.
5) You can then on, use the Add Printer Wizard on any other Windows PC and install it by searching for network printers.

Step 1 is the same for Mac
2) Go to System Preferences > Sharing
3) Check the box for Printer Sharing
4) Any Mac on the network can see it!!
5) Added treat: go to to install bonjour for Windows, using this software you can print using any Mac printer on any PC
