Question about Brother HL-2040 Laser Printer
NEWER MODLES HAVE A CARTRIGE ESTIMATING PROGRAM THAT NEEDS RESET (you need to tell the printer that it has a new cartrige). SIMPLY....
1. OPEN THE FRONT COVER.
2. TURN OFF.
3. HOLD DOWN THE GO BUTTON AND TURN BACK ON.
4. ONCE ALL 3 LIGHTS ARE SOLID, LET GO OF THE BUTTON & PRESS IT 2 TIMES RIGHT AWAY.
5. ALL LIGHTS SHOULD GO SOLID AGAIN, WHEN THEY DO PRESS THE GO BUTTEN 5 TIMES IN A ROW.
THIS SHOULD RESET YOUR PRINTER AND LET IT KNOW IT HAS A NEW CARTRIGE (even if it doesn't)!

dhnichol, I have also had this issue, let it run 15 min. and if the condition doesn't change try calling brother tech support, they were the ones who walked me through the previously stated list,
I have received 2 replys so far, that this has fixed their problems, that is 3 printers I know of, so you might have a different problem altogether. Try to let it warm up!

Doesn't help. Tried that several times. I am throwing all my Hl-2040's out and getting new ones. It's not worth the time.

SOURCE: Printer/Toner Problem
Sounds like it may be a remanufactured toner cartridge, and the 'reset
lever' has not been installed or replaced. If you look at the side of
the toner unit, you will see a sort of 'half moon' notch, that should
have a white coloured lever within it. This lever is pushed backward
when the cartridge is installed. So, on a new cartridge, it should be
pushed forward (or towards the printer as you install it).
Note: This lever is not installed on the cartridge that the printer was shipped with (starter cartridge).

Has anyone stood or sat on the printer. We recently had one of these machines in our workshop with this problem and the laser unit which is on the roof above the toner drum unit was bent (bowed down) so the laser was not focused on the drum. Removing the toner drum unit, grabbing the upper part of the machine with one hand and the lower base part with the other then bending the frame apart to straighten out the metal plate the laser is screwed to fixed the problem.

Same problem and nothing seems to work
toner light came on and I have refilled toner but it wont go out and it wont print!! Does anyone know of a way to bypass the sensor??
I bang the cartridge a couple of times and can sometimes get it to print a few pages at a time. I['ve probably printed 500 pages with pulling out the cartridge and banging it on its side, page by page. Good for the muscles but not the disposition.
I reset my printer by what Shortcutls sugested, however now my fan runs constantly at high speed and the printer does nothing else. All lights are off except the ready light. I cannot even run a test page. It printed fine before exect that the toner light was on. now the toner light is off. Is ther another step that may be missing.
