Sony cyber shot DSC-W1 Digital Camera

When I turn on the camera I get a black screen with "USB Mode Normal" and 4 dots underneath. I am unable to use any functions to change this. "Switch on Menu" appears at the bottom. When I push the Menu button, the camera shows a "USB Connect" in the lower left corner. I was taking great pics until this took over my screen. Want to override this and get back to reg. picture taking. Thanks.

Hi,
When I attempt to turn the Sony DSC-W1 camera on it make a single ring / chime noise, screen go black & camera shuts down. The lens doesn't open.
The other functions seem to work but when the camera is switched back to the photograph taking mode / icon the camera shuts down. I tried removing the batteries & also tapping on the camera without any positive results. Is anyone else having similar troubles. This camera was repaired by Sony for the same issue last year.
We have another Sony DSC-W7 7.2 mega pixels camera that had similar trouble picture taking operation failed to start lens would not open & screen said to shut down & restart,. Fortunately another Sony camera owners ( on line ) stated to try tapping on the camera. Strangly this cured the trouble.

I found an online manual for your camera. Page 84 talks about the USB Mode Normal with the 4 dots underneath. It also show a troubleshooting area for this and it is on page 96. Hopefully this will get your camera working right again. Here is the link to the pdf manual. http://www.docs.sony.com/release/DSCW1.pdf

Sony Cayber-shot DSC-W1 digital camera

I've seen a lot of DSC-W1 cameras where the power switch/shutter button assembly goes bad. This is most likely the case.

Make sure you use good, high-power batteries. I had a camera that couldn't use cheap batteries, as they didn't have enough juice. Check the battery contacts in your camera tho see if there may be corrosion or shorts that may drain the batteries when you insert them.
