This is kind of a late response, but this post may help other people. I had the same issue and was ready to have Garmin exchange my battery until I called them today and spoke to Tech support. They helped me upgrade the firmware on the unit (didnt take long) and so far the problem has been resolved. I have had it on for two hours without fully charging it, which is better than before when it only stayed on for about 20 minutes. I recommend that people with this issue call them first since it appears to be a common issue with this model nuvi.
Replacing the nuvi 765's battery is actually not all that hard as this video demonstrates:
The company that produced the video sells a kit which includes the battery and tools necessary to do this yourself if you'd like. See: http://www.newpower99.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=GARMIN+NUVI+765&Show=ExtInfo I swapped the battery of a friend's dying GPS using the aforementioned kit and all went well. His nuvi 765 is back up and running smoothly
The battery most likely needs to be replaced.
Another location is www.megacapacity.com -- I didnt find Garmin when I searched for it at planet battery.
After you install a new battery, make sure when you charge it the 1st few times to charge it fully and then use up the charge completely. 5 or 6 times like this and the battery will 'remember' to get a full charge.
Go to planetbattery.com and purchase a replacement battery
