Alternating L and 1 are appearing. Copier will not function and makes a grinding noise when turned on. Checked the head lock. It is unlocked. Unit is NOT new, has considerable wear.
Usually it is the gears in the fuser asm. One of them is cracked or imbedded with toner and grease. Open the right cover and remove the two screws holding the fuser in place. First remove the back cover and unplug the fuser cables.

I have the same problem, but after a while L and 3 appears, a tech told me that is the home position sensor, i'm waiting for test it.
