Maytag 4000 series Front load washer is displaying error code F24 and can't open door. This occurred when we tried to see if the washer would work after we were flooded and the washer had been sitting in several inches of water. How can we get the door open, what does the error mean and is this something that can be repaired on our own?

When ours does that it is because of the hard water build up. We have to un-hook the hot water clean out the minerals and it stops doing it.

There is an emergency access cord provided for the manual unlocking of the washer door and can be accessed by removing the dispenser bezel. Open the dispenser cover and remove the four screws securing the dispenser bezel to the top cover then lift the bezel off. Once the bezel is removed, look for the nylon cord near the door lock assembly through the opening left by the dispenser bezel. Pull the cord away from the door lock assembly to pivot the mechanical opener and push the locking lever into the open position. Open and close the door several times then start a new cycle.
Check the door lock assembly if the problem persists and replace it when necessary. Disconnect power to the washer prior to servicing to avoid the risk of electric shock.
Access to the door lock assembly requires the removal of the front panel, dispenser bezel, and lifting of the top cover.
Open the dispenser cover and remove the four screws securing the
dispenser bezel to the top cover then lift the bezel off.
Open the washer door and remove the two screws securing the door hinge
and the front panel to the front shroud assembly. Do the same to the two
screws on the opposite side of the door opening.
Disengage the front panel posts from the clips located on the face of
the cabinet by grasping the upper part of the front panel posts and
pressing in on the outer edges then twisting it inward. Once the front
panel posts are released from the cabinet, tilt the front panel away
from the cabinet and remove it.
Remove the two 5/16" hex-head screws securing the two top cover hold down brackets; one on each side. Swing the brackets to the outside to unhook it from the lip of the top cover then lift the top cover to expose the door lock assembly. Prop up the top cover to prevent it from falling back into position while accessing the door lock assembly.
Disconnect the wiring harnesses from the door lock assembly and the two mounting screws then rock the top of the assembly forward and lift it off the front shroud assembly.
Clean the wiring terminals and the connectors then reseat the connectors several times. Replace the door lock assembly when the problem is not resolved.
Install the new door lock assembly in reverse of the steps given above. Review the steps thoroughly for easy reassembly of the washer. Make sure the wiring harnesses are properly and firmly seated to the door lock assembly terminals. The door lock assembly is part number 22004435.

"F20" is a "No Water Detect" error code. This usually means you have very little water entering the machine, or no water at all. The following link explains the error code in more detail and steps necessary to troubleshoot:

Replacement parts (if required) can be purchased at any of the following websites:
searspartsdirect.com
pcappliancerepair.com
appliancepartspros.com
repairclinic.com
Prices vary between sites, so shop and compare. The first three sites listed also have helpful exploded view parts illustrations to assist you with locating and properly identifying the parts you may need.
NOTE: Each one of thes washers comes with a technical data sheet inside. The tech sheet lists all error codes, troubleshooting information, wiring diagrams, diagnostics procedures and illustrations. To access, you need to remove the lower toe panel directly below the door. The screws are located under the bottom front edge. With the screws removed, the panel will drop down and can be removed. If the tech sheet is not located directly behind the toe panel, it will be affixed to one of the interior cabinet walls. I mention the tech sheet, because you may need to refer to it in order to accurately troubleshoot. If you have any questions, please post back and let me know. I hope this information is helpful to you
