Leappad does not respond to stylus

It could be one of several things, a system reset, a firmware update but it sounds like a screen cable has become disconnected or similar fault. Before doing anything, is it still under warranty, if so its best to go back to the vendor or leapfrog and request an exchange. Here's the url to their support page.

If the warranty is out of date, then its down to dismantling the pad and looking for ribbon connectors which may have come adrift.

I thought the batteries were being drained over night each time I had to replace them. Then after replacing them about four times in twenty four hours, I repeatedly pressed the power button and eventually...

Sounds like a stuck pen button or the pen wire is pinched (look in the battery door at the pen wire).
Although it very well could be something (spilled) in the power button.
Don't take it apart too far.. once the membrane on the touch screen is disturbed or taken apart, it'll never work right again!
For a whole replacement leapPad, try a thrift store. I see them all the time, all models, under $20, sometimes under $5. (I have a 4 year old son and he destroys everything!)

My leappad plus writing won't respond when i press the go puttons on the books.

If it does power up, and you are unable to get only the Go button not to function, there could be 3 problems
1. the cartridge is dirty
2. the sytlus is bad
3. the sensor membrane is wet or bad.

Clean the cartridge or try another book.
Replace the stylus.
Dry out the leap pad (this is a last resort. place the leapPad in a sunny window for a day, standing upright and open (remove batteries).)

If nothing else works, you can find another leapPad at most thrift stores (that works!), for about $5-$25 (any model, but you might not get a lot of model choices, but some even come with books and cartridges you might not have!)
Take a book and a cartridge with you, maybe even batteries, and ask the store if you can try it before you buy it (they will usually let you test it)

When my child tries to use the pen to choose anything it is no longer working.

They recommend that you try cleaning the pen. Unplug the stylus pen and wipe both the plug and the jack with a dry cotton swab. On most LeapPad systems you can remove the pen via the battery compartment.

If the pen still does not work you can order a replacement stylus pen for $5, which covers shipping and handling.
Simply call Consumer Services at 1-800-701-5327, and order a new pen.

Hope this helps. Please let me know if I can help you with anything else.

Leapfrog LeapPad Learning system - The wire the leappad to the pen seems to be broken inside. Is there any way of getting this repaired or do I have to buy a new leap pad altogether.

You can buy replacement pens online and it's really easy to replace. Just unscrew the panel where the pen cable enters the unit. I think there are two more screws holding down the pen once inside. I've don't it with my kid's LeapPad. I transplanted a pen from a faulty pad but have seen replacement pens online.

Just Google "LeapPad pen" and you will find many links to replacement pens. Amazon carries them as well as Walmart. Check Toys 'R Us if you have one locally.
