If it's shutting down when you increase the volume, this usually indicates a bad speaker.

SOURCE: new pioneer vsx-517 keeps going into overload

Fastest way to test is to disconnect all speakers and turn up the vol. If it clips it needs service, then re-connect 8ohm speakers one by one and test until you find the speaker or channel that shorts. Then take that same speaker and hook it up to another channel and test, if it shorts, you know now it is either the speaker or the wire. Now, use a new piece of speaker wire from the same channel that caused it to short, replace the old and test. If it shorts, you've got a problem with the speaker. If your handy with a multimeter, check the resistance at the speaker and you will have your answer. If you are not familliar with a multimeter, just hook up a different speaker where the bad one is and test. It's just process of elimination. Hope this helps

SOURCE: VSX-D608 Overload and shutdown

Overload is displayed when the amp draw is excessive, and can be caused by different faults.
when Overload is detected, the protection circuit will shut down the unit to prevent further damage.

The first thing to try is hard reset. Shut down the unit for about one hour to drain power completely.
This can fix minor problems that can cause overload, for example electrostatic charge accumulation on internal capacitors.

If that does not fix the problem, then you must find the fault.

Overload can be caused by shorted speakers, wrong impedance speakers, or by a contact on speakers wiring.
Check speakers connection and test different speakers with 6, or better 8 Ohms impedance.

Another test can be done by unplugging all speakers, and reconnecting and testing them one at a time, at a very low volume.
No more than two 4 Ohms speakers can be connected to the unit, or you will get overload.

If the speakers are OK, then preamp, shorted input/output connectors, main power supply or faulty output transistors can draw too much amps causing overloading.

In that case it is recommendable contacting Pioneer at the number listed on the owners manual.

SOURCE: Pioneer VSX-D710S and the message SP off and DTS

The SP off message is the setting for turning the speakers off while headphones are connected on some Pioneer models. If yours is one such model, hold down the RECEIVER button and press the SPEAKER (text may be written above another main function) button on the remote simultaneously and the sound should return.

Pioneer vsx-d510

Disconnect all the speakers, and then check. Connect the speakers, one by one, and find which one makes it overload. That speaker is faulty. If you wish to get some details; check the site linked here. Pull up older posts.

Pioneer amplifier vsx-d512 overload message

This indicates the audio output stage in the receiver is loading down and triggering the overload protection circuit to kick in. Check the speaker wires for shorts, if okay! you will need a professional to assess the cost for repair.

VSX-859 RDS turns off

This is pretty close to the same Operating Manual.

This is the service manual, for what it's worth.

Generally speaking, an amp protects itself from heat, shorts and overloads.

Overloads can be from excessive periods of high output and shorts would be wiring issues or a speaker blowing up.

You should be able to feel if it's hot. WHY is it overheating? Make sure it has sufficient ventilation on all sides and that vent holes are not blocked by dust balls. Ensure the fan (if equipped) is running as designed (some only operate on demand). Clean dust and debris from it.

If the amp comes back on after cooling, you're lucky. They only have so many self-protection cycles in their lives so continuously resetting or cycling their power without addressing the cause can do more harm than good.

If it protects immediately on a cool power up you should disconnect the speaker connections and try it 'naked'. If it comes up then diagnose which lead(s) are shorted. If it does not come up the problem is internal and should be left to an experienced hands-on tech.

My pioneer amp vsx d508 reads overload.what to do?

Sounds like a bad amplifier IC.
Unhook all speakers at the back of your pioneer. turn it on and turn down the volume. If it's no longer in overload you have a bad speaker or speaker wires touching somewhere.
If its still in overload it's prlobley a amp IC and will cost between $25-$60 just for the part if you can replace it yourself.
