I have using it 80GB Blac iPod for the last one month. I could download/copy songs to the ipod and there was no problem. I downloaded the latest version of the iTunes and after that the iPod is not syncing. Eveytime I try to sync the iTune application hangs.
This happens sometimes on the initial use after the upgrade, what may be happening to make the application hang is that itunes is trying to access the internet for the music store causing the hang, especially if youre not on line when syncing. I think there is an option in the menu to turn off the store. If you still get problems, uninstall itunes, download and reinstall again.

I have tried your solution. However there is no option in the Menus in itunes to turn off the stores.
I have also unistalled itunes, downloaded and reinstalled the same. I have tried to sync from two separate computers: the desk top at home and lap top in the office. The result is the same. The sync command hangs the application.
Further if I try to restore the same, the message for restoring appears, after that nothing happens. The songs in the ipod are not erased and am able to play them.
