I gave mine a gentle but steady shake in the upright position and it suddenly started spinning. Left it balancing upright and its working. So who knows, id go with it being the gold screw for the laser, i havent opened it but maybe i moved it back in place.

Ignore everything other than #1. This was used for another problem as well. If you take a look, the object labeled as #1 is what keeps your disc from spinning. it's a dirty trick from Sony, as far as I can tell, given the motor turns off with the console or whe you open the cover. Anyway, if you clip the tip of that off with a toenail clipper it shouldn't impede the discs anymore.

Thanks for the advide on where it may need cleaning...I found the long gold screw thing had come out of it's position.
This prevented the disk from spinning...it slipped back into place no problems.
I went to a few gaming shops and they offered a trade in with $38 off the price of a second hand one $180.
They also told me it would cost me just as much to repair as it would to replace. Bloody rip offs!
Now my 8month old playstation is in perfect working order.

Send your Playstation to Playstationclinic.com fopr repair. It is easier that way. If you dont want to send it out. You need to open the Case and break the warranty seal. REmove the top half of the cover. At the back left corner of hte Disc drive asy. depress the limit switches to fool the Laser into believing the door is shut. Then while holding the limit down reset the unit by pressing the little button on the front right corner. Does your laser light up? Does your cd motor spin? If you answer no to either one of those questions, email [email protected] If you answer yes to both, get a magnifying mask and look at the Laser lens closely for any obstruction. Clean it if you find some then retest.

Try cleaning the lense with alchol content. If it doesan work then you may have to take it to Sony centre. Its quite a common pproblem. Ps2 lense is very powerful. It doesnt read discs with scratches. Try to play new disc after cleaning the disc. If your console is out of warranty then you may wish to open it and clean the lense. Cheers, BBB

The diagram posted by ansfarid helped me out. The long, gold-colored screw-like part had come unhooked at one end. I put it back and it's working fine now.
My symptoms were the same as many others reported here - disc wouldn't spin, laser wouldn't come on.
