I press the on/off button and the camera makes a small whirring noise then the screen saver comes on for a few seconds and then goes off. None of the other buttons respond. The battery is freshly charged and I've downloaded the pix I had taken.
Any suggestions?
I also have the same problem with my Pentax Optio WP. It had not been in the water recently and I had just finished taking a bunch of pictures. Turned the camera off. About 5 min later I turned it on again to take more pictures and I got the whirring noise, a series of beeps and then it turned off. Is there any hope of getting this camera repaired or is it time to buy a new one?

Same here. Dropped while on holiday in Dublin. Whirring noise, then nothing. Have read that it'll cost more to repair than bought for originally. Very disappointed. Won't buy Pentax again and will tell others to stay clear - it was less than two years old

Re: Pentax Optio WP
This suggests the lens motor/gearing has failed- I guess other aspects of the system wait for the lens to extend before coming active - possibly due to the waterproofing system.
You can only go back to Pentax with this problem.

Many cameras have a button that switches the lcd screen off. Is there a chance that you may have pressed it by accident? it will be a button with a picture of a box with a vertical line either side of it or LCD/VF written on it. try finding that button and press it once, the screen should come on after a few seconds. If this doesn't work then I suspect there is a fault with the camera. Good luck.
Press and hold the playback button for 2 seconds. The camera should turn on and be in playback mode. Switch to Camera Mode by opening the from slider cover. Hope that fixes it. See Pentax Z10 Manual Page 34. http://www.pentaximaging.com/files/manual/OptioZ10.pdf

ok have same problem press the power button and and the play> button at the same time. your screen will come on but not lens. then hold the play button down untill lens come out. this will work for you , you may have to do it a couple of times but it will work
My optio t10 did basically the same thing...turned on, lens goes out, then automatically shut off. I took the advice of a solution listed here for another problem...hit the camera. For whatever reason it worked.
When I have that problem I replace the bettery with my spare and I recharge the battery that came out. Works every time.
Maybe your battery is worn out and not holding it's charge properly.
I have the same problem. How was it remedied?
