It is called a Torx bit. Looks like a little six pointed star. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torx)
You can buy a screwdriver handle that accepts various replacement tips, and get a set of torx tips in various sizes to use with it, or you can buy a set of torx tipped screwdrivers just like conventional phillips and slotted tip drivers.
You should be able to find both of these at any Big Box home & builder supply store, or at sears.
Your local hardware guy will also carry them, as do many mail order catalogs.
Dewalt uses an assortment of sizes on their tools.
I'd go ahead and get the full set so you're sure to have what you need on hand, and save yourself some aggravation when you start to disassemble that thing.
By the way, there are also torx tipped tools like the folding allen wrenches that come in a handle. I have a set like this, and it is way handy, boy.

A TORX I believe , if it is a 6 point star type screw hole? They are measured in mm I think and 15 and 20 are the most common sizes.

Jaws won't tighten or loosen to hold a bit

Hmmm some times the counterclockwise screw that attaches the chuck to the drill come forward and that is how then it stucks the 3 parts that fix a drill to a chuck. Check if this screw come forward. If yes then destroy it and replace it... We destroy it by using a drill smaller than it (usually it is 5mm so we use 4mm bit and of course a CARBIDE one because even cobalt ones can not drill a hardened bolt)

I cannot remove screws from wood the drill just just turns on the phillips screw head

The screw is either broken ,the hole stripped out, or screw not into something solid.Try prying up under the screwhead with something as you turn it with the drill

How to remove the chuck?

open the chuck fully and it shoudl have a screw inside. Unscrew it, but be carefull, these screws are usually reversed - to uncsrew, rotate it clockwise. Once done, put allen key into chuck (short side in), fasten the chuck to hold allen key well and hit the key with hammer - counterclockwise direction. You might want to verify this procedure with someone else as I have no experience with Dewalt, but this way it works for Makita, Metabo, Narex, ... then why not for Dewalt? Juraj

How to remove a chuck from a DeWalt hand drill

Open chuck all the way (like for a large drill bit). There should be a set screw at the bottom (where you would put a drill bit). Don't turn too hard - it may be a left handed screw (I don't remember if it is a lefty for sure but try gently each way then with a bit more force each way until it moves).

Good luck.

Was given a drywall screw gun to use, but I need to change the bit to fit smaller star drywall screws. How do I remove and replace this screw bit?

I use a DeWalt and the bit should just pull off like you would a cordless drill/driver. You might need a little persuasion (vice grips or pliers) because of the constant torque placed on it.

The dc925 and the current model dcd950 along with several other models of Dewalt 's line of cordless hammer drills DO NOT have a screw inside removal requires a CHUCK REMOVAL FIXTURE part #
233804-40 also you can't use a generic replacement chuck. As of 2/2/2010 the prices on the Dewaltservicenet web site are $72.74 for
the tool and $69.70 for the chuck, part # 330075-90.
