Can't connect with 2nd computer...

I have this router running with my Vista laptop. I want to also use it on my kids' PC, but I can't get it to install. The kids' PC runs Windows XP. I got a CNET WIreless G USB dongle CWP-854. I installed it. It says it installed fine. But I can't get the router to install. Not even the first step. It says it doesn't recognize a connection.

I installed the dongle on two different computers that the kids have and it wouldn't pick up on either one of them. So I assumed I had to install the router software? I tried resetting both the router and modem and nothing on either computer. What am I doing wrong?

I would like to find out if you are even getting a computer down by the time that has little waves coming out of it. Is your router broadcasting the SSID? Do you have any type of security or MAC filtering setup on the router?

    Thank you.

You dont have to install the router on the kids computer. your installed wireless dongle should just have to search for the wirless network you setup highlight and connect to it. Please clarify "cant get router to install".

1st.  What brand and model # of your router? 2. The router cd should be run only on the computer u have connected to the router with a network cable. Your vista laptop. Is it connected with to the router with a cable? 3. If so, it will be the one used to configure your router for wireless setup. When you ran the setup it should have gone thru Wireless Setup. It will ask you for an SSID. That is a name you will give your wirless network. It can be anything you want. just remember it.  It will also ask you to setup security for your wireless network. follow the instructions to setup a password. write it down. This is an important step so anyone cannot just logon to your wireless signal an start using ur internet connection or gain access to your computers. 4. when u setup your dongle on your kids computer it will search for wireless signals in the area. you will look for the one u setup in the previeous step. you will select it and it should ask you for the passkey you setup. once connected you will have access to the internet.
Think of your router as a private radio station and the wireless usb dongle is the radio. The only way your computers can tune to it is using the dongle and if you know the name of the station (your SSID) and the passkey.

1st have clean all settings? a reset button is behind nerby the power connector.
2nd change wireless passkey(use WPA2 it´s safer) and very important the router password.
3rd reboot computer, then vista work well. (Its a Vista Defect, dont ask me why, but it´s true)

When I have my router hooked directly to my computer it works fine. When I hook it up so the kids can use their laptops, the speed is very slow.

I think the first thing you should try to verify if the signal is strenght enough, because if it is not so the speed will be slow too.

Problems getting a connection with vista operating system

This could possibly be an issue with the drivers provided by vista for your NIC. Try looking for updates for it or just tell me the model name of it.

I have a broadband internet connection at home which had a modem and only one LAN cable. Now I have 2 laptop's one with Microsoft XP and other MS-Vista. Whenever I try to connect internet the one with XP...

if you had say one desktop and one laptop I would say to buy another LAN card for the desktop and enable internet connection sharing on it for the other computer but with two laptops that might not be possible and you will need a router.
But routers are pretty cheap nowadays and you can probably find a basic 4 port router on eBay for around $20 (you don’t really need to spend the extra money on a wireless one unless of course both laptops have wireless connections then you might find that a wireless router to be pretty useful.)
But to answer your question YES you need a router since a router will take your IP address and split it up into multiple internal IP addresses and allow more that one connection to the internet that will appear as one connection to your ISP

Problem with connection of networking and VOIP.

Go to your Run program on the computer that your are having connection problems with. Type cmd.exe in the box. When your DOS page appears, type in ipconfig/ release. Be sure to use a space between the / and the word release. After it releases, type in ipconfig/ renew, using the space as well. Close out of your DOS. Recheck your internet connection. Before you recheck it though, make sure that your computer's wireless password, if you are using any, are the same as your wireless router's password. Hope this helps.

Pc connection problems

Sounds like you are setup to use Internet Connection Sharing. don't do this. Have each computer connect to the internet via the router. If the router is wireless connect all computers wirelessly to the router that are wireless capable and any computers that are not wireless capable, connect them to the router via a cat5 cable to the cat5 ports on the router. This will solve your problem. BPCS
