I need to convert the headphone jack to power external speakers.

The jack's output level is attenuated so as not to overload a headphone. I need to get access to the jack by removal of the back of the cabinet, to determine if and where resistors are present, and bypass them. I also don't know which are the right screws to remove, so as not to disturb the LCD. I do not have a schematic diagram.

It would be less trouble to disable the internal speakers from the television's setup menu and connect to a set of powered speakers or a receiver using the built-in audio outputs. It will be a challenge to get good sound quality and levels from the headphone jack.

My dell latitude d510 internal spk is ready but output headfone jek not working

these are fairly passive in that if a headphone or earpiece is plugged in, they switch the output from the internal speaker to the external speaker. So, it's usually one of a few problems.
  • The jack is mucked up, and needs replaced.
  • The headphone plug wires have a broken connection
  • The headphone needs power to amplify, and that's not working.
If trying another headphone or earpiece you know is working doesn't work, it's the jack itself. They can only handle so many uses before they either fail closed, or open or completely. Depending on which one, either:
  • neither speakers nor headphones work.
  • only speakers work
  • only headphones work
Replacement necessitates opening the case and replacing the jack. For that, there's no help.

My frontman 15r has power but no sound

Check to make sure the problem is not with the headphone jack or the external speaker jack as these are in the circuit between the power amp chip and the built in speaker.

You can also trace through the circuit with a music source on the amp input and with simple headphones check the signal path through the circuit until the music disappears. To do this, take a headphone and set it up with 2 test leads on the ends- attach one to ground.

Now your TL072 op amps have 2 outputs, pin1 and pin 7. The inputs for pin 1 are pins 2 and 3, and the inputs for the amp section outputing on pin 7 are pin 5 and pin 6. If you get sound at pin 1 or pin 7, you move forward to the next TL072. Check for output. Then move to the power amp chip on the heat sink. Pin 1 should be the output and will be wired to the headphone jack first. The external speaker jack second and the built in speaker third. The input for that power amplifier chip is pin 7 or pin 8 depending how it is wired.

If the amp chip is blown, make sure to put an adequate amount of thermal grease on the back side of the IC in contact with the heat sink so it can operate as cool as possible.

Where is the line in jack for my Gateway MC7321u Notebook? Is it one of the headphone jacks?

Some computers have a special jack labeled line in. If your computer does not have a line in jack, you can use the microphone jack. You can then adjust the volume of the device in control panel under sound options. The headphone jack is only for output. I have seen some computers where you plug in a cable to the microphone jack and you will be asked what kind of device it is.

Can i make a external speaker work on my SC-1568D

Most TV's provide audio out. Some use RCA jack (right and left) and some use 3.5mm jack. This is usually line level output which means its enough signal to drive a headphone but won't drive speakers directly. You need to use amplified (powered) speakers or run through a receiver or component amplifier. Computer speakers will work.

My asus desktop pc cg1330 does not have sound - does it need external speakers- I can find no indication of what is needed

Very few desktop computers have built-in speakers other than a small beeper on the motherboard, used for error codes at startup. You need some kind of external speakers which you plug in to the output jack on the computer's rear panel. Also, these need to be powered speakers, meaning they have a built-in amplifier. The computer's audio output signal is line level, and too low to drive speakers directly. You could plug in headphones, though, and listen to the computer that way until you get some speakers.

Hope this helps, and thanks for using Fixya!

Just wondered if i can connect my speakers straight to cd player or do i need to go through an amp Thanks

Component CD players like yours must be used with an amplifier. Their output is called "line level" and isn't beefy enough to drive speakers directly. An amplifier is needed to boost those line level signals to speaker level. The same is true for other components like tape decks, DVD players and so on. A CD player may have a headphone output jack, though, since headphones don't require the same power levels as speakers. So you could use the player by itself for headphone listening.

Hope this has cleared the air for you. Thanks for using Fixya!

Can't get my laptop speakers to work through headphone jack

the reason for this is that the audio thru this jack is attenuated to a level where you don't loose quality and to prevent ear damage. You better try the audio out or audio monitor output jacks located in the back of the tv(if this model comes with them). you'll probably need an audio amp to get the speakers to work properly though.

Headphones with mic / external speakers

Does your computer have front audio ports? If so, you can just plug it in there. Otherwise you need a single male 2 dual female converter to plug into the speaker port.
