Check the position of the Button Hole Stitch adjuster that is directly under the stitch length control. It looks like a flat head screw and should be straight up and down for normal sewing.

Be sure TOP control shows zig-zag. Flip top right bar from red to black or black to red on side of machine facing you. You can then change the widths by changing the numbers on that same circle control.

SOURCE: can't tighten clutch on Kenmore zig zag sewing machine.

The clutch has fallen off the shaft. Remove the very small screw in the clutch release screw to remove the clutch release. Place the clutch(round thing with ears on it) back on the shaft with the center ears pointing towards the outside. Put the clutch release screw back on. Tighten it to make sure it works
properly. Put the small screw back in the clutch release screw and test it again. If it will not tighten or release properly, remove the clutch ,rotate it180 degrees and try it again. This should solve your problem.

SOURCE: no zig and cotton keeps breaking

Make sure you have a new sharp needle installed for both problems and sometimes you need a particular kind of needle for the fabric. Also some machines don't deal well with 100% cotton thread. For some reason it gets caught up in the machine somewhere and breaks. Gutterman and Metrosene make excellent although slightly more expensive threads. Coats and Clark thread is good too. They make an all cotton thread but it doesn't come in as many colors. If you have the old spools of cotton thread from Walmart, just use them for topstitching if you need the color. Other wise, use them for hand stitching or throw them away. One more thing that I can think of off hand, one of my machines does not like lining fabric. For some reason the thread breaks if I stitch really fast. If you have to use that thread, you may try sewing slowly. One more thing, when was the last time your machine was serviced? This can make a huge difference if it's been awhile and you use the machine a lot. Good luck. Hope any of this helps.

1975/76 Kenmore sewing machine will not zig say stitch

There is a zig zag gear in the top of the machine that breaks somertimes and thus prevents the machine from working correctly. Or it could be the machine hasnt been cleaned and lubricated properly.

Does my kenmore sewing machine model # 158.17540 Do zig zag stitch

Here's a manual you can order for your machine:

Kenmore 158 instruction manuals 3

This sewing machine vendor sells a needle plate for your Kenmore. Because the needle hole in the plate is wide, it most likely has zig-zag capability. A straight stitch machine would not need a wide needle hole if it sews only forward & backward.

My Kenmore 19233 refuses to zig zag stitch past 2mm wide. At 2mm it is a reliable stitch, moving toward 7mm it is a straight stitch with one or two zig zag blips.

Do you have it on zig zag or maybe it is in one of the hem stitches. Make sure you have not selected a special stitch. Sometimes with a small width setting it looks like no zig zag, then when you increase the length you see it is not.

My Bernina 1130 has zig zag problems. I have to turn my machine on for 10 minutes before it will even sew. When I sew straight it will skip a few stitches every inch or so. Now it will not zig zag mo

here are some suggestions
Skipped stitches
1. The needle is not inserted correctly
Remove needle & reinsert needle( flat side towards the back of machine)
2. The needle is damaged
replace with new needle
3. The wrong size needle is being used
Choose a needle to suit the thread & fabric
4. The foot not attached correctly
Check & attach correctly

I really recommend having the sewing machine checked to
see if there is a internal problem, since you have to wait 10 minutes
before sewing & the problem with the zig zag & looping.

Trouble sewing lycra fabric using a zig zag stitch

You have the machine set for blind hem stitching. Change the stitch selector to stretch stitch, which is a single, in line stitching zig zag stitch.

I have a Kenmore model 1690. The needle when it goes down does not hit the hole in the foot plate. It comes down too far to the left of the opening, making it impossible to use the machine. I have...

This machine, when you have it on straight stitch, will sew with the needle to the left. If it's hitting the pressure foot, you may have the wrong pressure foot on the machine. If it's hitting the needle plate when you have the pressure foot removed, it's possible you have set for zig zag and you have a straight stitch needle plate on the machine. I believe this machine came with 2 needle plates. One for straight stitch, and another for zig zag.
