GE Spacesaver XL1800

My microwave currently will not shut off unless it is unplugged. When you plug it back in it is on and if you put something in it to heat while it is stuck like this it is not heating it. I have tried pressing the keypad buttons and they all work except the power off key. So it is stuck in a mode of being on and when something is inserted while in this mode it does not heat it.

Quite often this is due to a bad door switch. Opening the door while cooking (without first hitting the STOP pad) is the primary cause of door switch failure. It may also be a broken mount that holds the door switch. If you or a friend decide to work on it, we have *critical* safety, disassembly, and troubleshooting info (as well as a text file which helps in diagnosing and repairing door switch problems) at our site, which is linked at our listing here on FixYa: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your model number here: http://tinyurl.com/gv383

SOURCE: GE spacesaver microwave XL1800, all works but not heating

There are some troubleshooting steps you can take to possibly determine the problem before calling or taking it for service, you need a multimeter and a capacitor discharging tool. if you posses BOTH of these tools,
there are 4 causes for this symptom
1) Transformer
2) Capacitor
3) Diode
4) Magnetron
I can instruct you on how to test and/or replace the first three of these. The magnetron is VERY dangerous and should not be serviced or tampered with except by qualified personel. let me know if you would like to take any of these steps otherwise you could bring it to a repair station.

My turntable on my GE Spacesaver xl1800 isn't turning...there is a noise which happens when it tries to turn....is there something that I as a homeowner can do instead of calling a repair person?? thanks

The motor assembly is fixed to the base of the oven usually with two screws and access i obtained by removing the inspection plate directly beneath the motor. It is usally a plug in synchronus motor that revolves at a few revs per minute but the plastic cogs in the motors gear box fail and the motor assembly must be replaced. They are fairly inexpensive and obtainable usually from a domestic appliance repair shop.
If you feel confident, disconnect it from the mains power, remove anything in the cavity and turn it upside down if it is a tabletop model, a little more complicated if it is built in!
Remove the inspection plate and disconnect the motor. Remove the motor and go and get a new one. Re fit it and put the microwave back in its position. Plug it back in, with the turntable and plate. Put a cup of water on the plate inside of the oven and heat for 20 seconds to check the plate goes round.
Hope this helps.

My microwave started making a humming noise and won't work. The light doesn't come on either. I've tried unplugging it and plugging into a different outlet. Still doesn't work. It's getting power - the...

If it's humming all the time, it may be a bad electrolytic capacitor on the control circuit board. We repair these all the time for $39.95 postpaid.

I'd first make sure it's not cooking when it's supposed to be off.

Just put a cup of water in it, shut the door, and let it set for a minute. Then see if the water's warmer.

If it is warmer, unplug the oven until it's fixed. That's probably a shorted relay on the control board, which we can also fix.

If it is not warmer, I'd bet you need the control circuit board repaired or replaced.

At our Web site, you can get details of our service, plus we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

If you want to check the price of a new circuit board, enter your full model number here.

WHEN PRESSING COOK TIME OVEN CLICKS ON FOR ONE SECOND AND RESETS CLOCK

Please try on some other power point as if there is loose contact or sparking in point which cause to switch off as soon as you start because of heavy current drawn by oven and clock also resets. If not solved even then must have some short circuit or over loading in timer circuit or magnetron. in this case you have to call for a service engineer.
