My microwave currently will not shut off unless it is unplugged. When you plug it back in it is on and if you put something in it to heat while it is stuck like this it is not heating it. I have tried pressing the keypad buttons and they all work except the power off key. So it is stuck in a mode of being on and when something is inserted while in this mode it does not heat it.
Quite often this is due to a bad door switch. Opening the door while cooking (without first hitting the STOP pad) is the primary cause of door switch failure. It may also be a broken mount that holds the door switch. If you or a friend decide to work on it, we have *critical* safety, disassembly, and troubleshooting info (as well as a text file which helps in diagnosing and repairing door switch problems) at our site, which is linked at our listing here on FixYa: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your model number here: http://tinyurl.com/gv383

SOURCE: GE spacesaver microwave XL1800, all works but not heating
There are some troubleshooting steps you can take to possibly determine the problem before calling or taking it for service, you need a multimeter and a capacitor discharging tool. if you posses BOTH of these tools,
there are 4 causes for this symptom
1) Transformer
2) Capacitor
3) Diode
4) Magnetron
I can instruct you on how to test and/or replace the first three of these. The magnetron is VERY dangerous and should not be serviced or tampered with except by qualified personel. let me know if you would like to take any of these steps otherwise you could bring it to a repair station.
Hope this helps...Feedback always helps me
