Compatibility of Sony DCR-HC19E with Windows Vista

My sony camcorder is not being detected as new hardware on a Windows Vista operated system. I've used it previously on Windows XP and it worked fine. I was able to download footage, edit and burn to dvd. The sony website says that no drivers are required for this model. I've been told that I need a firewire connection. Is this correct? What should I do to solve this problem? Pls help.

You can connect other firewire devices - to each other - without even using your computer ; also , usb can slow down video transfers , if other processes are going on at the same time ;
